JWST observations show evidence that patchy water clouds on WISE 0855, a cold brown dwarf beyond our solar system, change thickness over time. The result is not the first evidence of water clouds outside the solar system; it is the first direct confirmation that their thickness varies on another world, based on time-series spectroscopy interpreted with atmospheric models.
What did JWST discover about water clouds outside our solar system?
A team led by Brittany E. Miles of the University of Arizona used JWST’s NIRSpec instrument to observe WISE 0855 repeatedly over 11 hours. The spectra support a picture of patchy water clouds that become thicker and thinner over time. The University of Arizona describes this as the first direct confirmation of changing water-cloud thickness on another body; earlier work had already found evidence that WISE 0855 has water or water-ice clouds.
The result is an inference from changes in the object’s light, not a photograph of individual clouds. The study compared the changing spectra with atmospheric and structure models to interpret which atmospheric properties were changing. The paper record reports that the study was accepted to The Astrophysical Journal.

Repeated spectra provided a time series
NIRSpec recorded spectra every 15 minutes across wavelengths from 2.87 to 5.27 micrometers, at a resolving power of about 1,000. A spectrum shows how much light an object emits at different wavelengths. Repeating that measurement let the team track how features in WISE 0855’s spectrum changed during the observation, rather than relying on a single snapshot.

The authors used principal component analysis to examine patterns of correlated spectral variation, then compared those patterns with atmospheric and structure models. Their interpretation distinguishes changes in water-cloud thickness at lower pressures from changing gas abundances associated with quenched atmospheric pressures. These are model-based conclusions about atmospheric layers, not direct measurements of a three-dimensional weather map.
Gas absorption changed too
Carbon monoxide absorption varied by as much as 10% peak to peak at some wavelengths, and carbon monoxide and phosphine variations were correlated in the study. The gas changes are a separate part of the result: the researchers’ interpretation places them at different pressures from the changing cloud thickness. The reported 10% figure applies to absorption at some wavelengths, not to the whole atmosphere or the cloud cover.

What was known about WISE 0855 before this result?
Evidence for clouds predates the JWST time series. In 2016, researchers used Gemini North and its GNIRS instrument to obtain a spectrum over 13 nights, totaling 14.4 hours. The spectrum covered 4.5 to 5.2 micrometers, and a cloudy atmospheric model fit it better than a cloud-free model. That supported the presence of water or water-ice clouds but did not show that cloud thickness changed over time.
| Study | Instrument and wavelength range | Observation design | What it established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skemer et al., 2016 | Gemini North/GNIRS; 4.5–5.2 μm | 14.4 hours over 13 nights | A cloudy model fit better than a cloud-free model, supporting cloud presence. |
| Miles et al., 2026 | JWST/NIRSpec; 2.87–5.27 μm, R ≈ 1,000 | 11-hour time series, sampled every 15 minutes | Time-variable spectra interpreted as evidence for changing water-cloud thickness, alongside variable gas absorption. |
NASA’s account of the earlier study quotes Andrew Skemer: “We would expect an object that cold to have water clouds, and this is the best evidence that it does.” The distinction matters: the earlier spectrum supported cloud presence, while the newer repeated measurements address variability.

Is WISE 0855 a planet?
No confirmed planet orbiting a star is involved. WISE 0855 is a cold brown dwarf, an object that is not classified as a planet in this context. The University of Arizona and NASA describe it as about 265 kelvin and approximately 7.5 light-years from Earth. Calling it a “nearby world” in a general description does not make it a confirmed exoplanet.

- They support: patchy water clouds on WISE 0855 changing thickness, as inferred from repeated spectral measurements and atmospheric models.
- They also report: variable carbon monoxide absorption, with correlated carbon monoxide and phosphine variations.
- They do not provide: images of individual clouds, a full three-dimensional map of the atmosphere, or a definitive rotation period.
The University of Arizona says further JWST baseline observations are needed to better understand the brown dwarf’s rotation and three-dimensional atmospheric structure. The current observations establish time variation over the measured interval, but do not settle those broader questions.
