There is no single universal “Jupiter occultation time.” The phrase can mean either the Moon passing in front of Jupiter or Jupiter passing in front of a distant star. The right time depends on which event you mean; for a lunar occultation, it also depends on your observing location. Use a current, observer-specific listing or ephemeris and check the date, time zone or time scale, and contact you want to observe.
What does “Jupiter occultation” mean?
An occultation happens when one object passes in front of another from the observer’s point of view. For Jupiter, the foreground object may be the Moon or Jupiter itself:
| Event | What passes in front? | What the time describes |
|---|---|---|
| Lunar occultation of Jupiter | The Moon passes in front of Jupiter as seen from Earth. | Local contacts for an observing location; visibility and times vary by geography. |
| Stellar occultation by Jupiter | Jupiter passes in front of a background star. | A predicted event involving a particular star and observing geometry; the star’s brightness and the observer’s location matter. |
These are different kinds of events, so a date or time for one should not be treated as a schedule for the other.

How to find the correct local time
- Identify the event. Check whether a listing means the Moon covering Jupiter or Jupiter occulting a named star.
- Set your observing location. For a lunar event, use the town or coordinates where you will observe. For a stellar event, use a prediction that specifies the event’s observing circumstances and visibility path.
- Read the time basis. Confirm the date and whether the displayed time is local civil time, UTC, or another time scale. JPL Horizons supports topocentric output (calculated for a specific observer) as well as geocentric output, and offers multiple time scales; see the Horizons System Manual.
- Check whether the event is observable. Verify Jupiter is above your horizon at the relevant time and consider whether the sky is dark enough for your observing conditions. Horizons can aid observers, but determining whether an event is suitable to observe remains the user’s responsibility.
- Record the contact you want. A start time alone may not tell you when Jupiter disappears or reappears. Use the event’s contact window and labels.
Use current ephemeris output for an observing plan. JPL notes that Earth-orientation predictions can lead to slight differences in later ephemerides; if exact reproducibility matters, retain the run details as well as the result.

What do occultation contact times mean?
Contact times mark stages of the apparent overlap. For Jupiter passing behind the Moon, ingress is the disappearance and egress is the reappearance. Listings may also give the first contact, when the apparent limbs begin to touch, and the end of the event. JPL’s SPICE documentation defines occultation boundaries by apparent contact between the modeled limbs of the occulting and occulted bodies; see Find Occultation.
When comparing two listings, make sure they refer to the same contact and time basis. “Starts at 4:14” could mean the beginning of a public event, not Jupiter’s first contact.

A dated lunar-occultation example—and why it is not a current schedule
The NASA Night Sky Network listing for Virginia Beach, Virginia, described a Jupiter/Moon occultation on October 6, 2026. It gave a public-event window of 4:14–5:27 a.m. Eastern, with Jupiter’s first contact at 4:20 a.m., its emergence beginning at 5:24 a.m., and Jupiter fully visible again at 5:26 a.m. Those were local values for that specific location and event, and the date has passed. They should not be reused as future or universal Jupiter occultation times. See the NASA Night Sky Network event listing.

No exact future lunar-occultation calendar can be inferred from that example. For a future event, look up a current listing or ephemeris for your own location rather than extrapolating from another city’s past times.

How often does Jupiter occult a star?
A 2023 study by Richard G. French and Damya Souami predicted 1,844 Jupiter occultations of stars brighter than K≤10 over 2023–2050. For stars with K≤7, it estimated about one event per year; the study noted higher rates in 2031 and 2043. These are long-range predictions for stellar occultations and specified brightness limits—not a promise that an event will be visible from any particular town or a count of lunar occultations. The forecasts use Gaia DR3 star data and near-infrared K-band photometry from 2MASS; the authors describe how rates vary with star-field density along Jupiter’s apparent path. See the paper, Earth-based Stellar Occultation Predictions for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Titan, and Triton: 2023–2050, and its linked supplemental prediction material.

A stellar occultation prediction depends on the positions of Jupiter and the background star and on the observing geometry. The region on Earth from which the event can be observed is therefore part of the prediction, not an optional detail. For an individual observer, a predicted event still needs a local visibility check.

Precise positions and observing paths are important in occultation science: timing observations from different places can provide distinct viewing chords across the foreground object. NASA discusses this observing approach in its article on using a star’s brief disappearance to size asteroids for the Lucy mission; that article’s primary focus is asteroid occultations, not a Jupiter schedule.
