In August 2014, JPMorgan Chase said it was cooperating with law-enforcement authorities as the FBI and U.S. Secret Service investigated reported cyberattacks against several American financial institutions. The FBI said its immediate goal was to determine the attacks’ scope; public reporting at the time did not establish who was responsible or why. JPMorgan’s later disclosures estimated that the incident affected about 76 million households and 7 million small businesses.
What did “working with the FBI” mean?
On August 27–28, 2014, the FBI said it was working with the U.S. Secret Service to determine the scope of reported attacks against several U.S. financial institutions. JPMorgan said it was cooperating with law-enforcement officials. The FBI’s stated objective, as quoted by TIME on August 28, was “to determine the scope of recently reported cyber attacks against several American financial institutions.”
JPMorgan’s public disclosures followed as the bank investigated the incident. On September 10, the firm said it was cooperating with government agencies. Its October 2 filing gave more detail about the information and population involved.
What information did JPMorgan say was compromised?
In its October 2, 2014 filing, JPMorgan said compromised data included customers’ names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses, as well as internal information relating to those users. The filing estimated that the data impacted approximately 76 million households and 7 million small businesses. Those are the bank’s estimates, not a more precise count.

The same filing reported that the bank had not seen unusual customer fraud related to the incident.
What did the bank tell customers about unauthorized transactions?

Was an attacker identified?
The contemporaneous reports cited here do not establish the attacker’s identity or motive. Early reports included theories about Russian involvement or political retaliation, but those were not confirmed findings in the cited official filings. Do not treat them as established explanations for the incident.
At the time, a JPMorgan spokeswoman told AFP, in a report carried by SecurityWeek on August 28, 2014, that “companies of our size unfortunately experience cyber attacks nearly every day.” She also said the bank had “multiple layers of defense to counteract any threats and constantly monitor fraud levels.” Those comments describe the bank’s position, not an independent determination of the attack’s cause or full scope.
