Jamie Dimon’s core warning about artificial intelligence is about timing. In his letter to shareholders dated April 6, 2026, published with JPMorganChase’s 2025 annual report, the chairman and CEO said AI will definitely eliminate some jobs while enhancing others, and that deployment “may move faster than workforce adaptation to new job creation.” He did not forecast net job losses. The concern is the speed and shape of the transition, and whether workers, companies and governments can keep up with it.
What Dimon said in the April 2026 shareholder letter
The AI section of the letter makes three separate claims. AI adoption may move faster than earlier technological transformations. It will affect nearly every company function. And it will both remove and reshape jobs. Dimon’s wording on job loss is direct: “AI will definitely eliminate some jobs, while it enhances others.” Each of these is his assessment, presented as a possibility or an expectation rather than a measured projection.
The pace problem
The warning is not simply that AI will replace workers. Dimon’s concern is that deployment could outrun two things at once: the creation of new roles, and the ability of workers to retrain or move into them. A company can redeploy people inside its own organization. The wider labor market does not move on the same schedule, which is why he argues that businesses and governments should prepare before the disruption arrives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteJob effects: losses, enhancements and new roles
Dimon expects productivity gains and new jobs alongside the losses. In his framing, some roles will disappear, others will be enhanced, and new ones will emerge. Neither the letter nor his later remarks put a number on how many jobs fall into each group, so any headline total attributed to him as an estimate is not something he has published.

Security risks and the case against overreacting
The letter singles out three risks: deepfakes, misinformation and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. His prescription has three parts: prepare in advance, assess honestly what went wrong when an incident occurs, and correct problems without suppressing useful innovation. He warns against two opposite errors. One is overreacting to the first major incident by regulating away beneficial uses. The other is underreacting and failing to learn from what went wrong. In his words: “These risks are real, but they are manageable if companies, regulators and governments prepare.”
Who is expected to respond: companies and governments
Dimon separates what a bank can do for its own staff from what society has to handle. JPMorgan says it plans to support and redeploy its affected workforce. For broader effects, he discusses retraining, reskilling, income assistance, early retirement and relocation as possible responses for business and government. The letter presents these as options to weigh, not as an adopted program.

| Level | Responses Dimon names | Status in the cited material |
|---|---|---|
| JPMorgan (the firm) | Support and redeploy affected workers | Stated plan. In the February 2026 company update, Dimon said the bank had already displaced some workers through AI and offered them other jobs. No outcome data for that redeployment appears in those remarks. |
| Business and government (broader society) | Retraining, reskilling, income assistance, early retirement, relocation | Possible responses discussed. No specific government program or proposal is named. |
The truck-driver thought experiment
The clearest illustration of his concern came in a February 23, 2026 company update Q&A. Dimon asked listeners to imagine rapid automation affecting commercial truck drivers. He argued that society would have to weigh efficiency gains against what happens to the people displaced. He suggested advance planning could include phasing in changes and allowing time for retirement, assistance, relocation or retraining.
He was explicit that this was a hypothetical. “I’m not predicting this is going to be a problem, I’m simply saying, now is the time to start thinking about what you’d do if it does.” In the same exchange he said, “It may happen faster than we can adjust to it.” Read the example as an illustration of the planning argument. It is not a forecast for trucking, and it is not evidence about current employment in that field.

Later hiring signals and the 2024 baseline
On May 21, 2026, Bloomberg reported comments Dimon made in an interview at JPMorgan’s China Summit in Shanghai. He said the bank would likely hire more AI specialists and fewer traditional bankers in some categories, with AI making employees more productive. That describes the mix of hiring. It is not a headcount reduction plan.
For earlier context, Dimon’s April 8, 2024 letter (covering the 2023 annual report) said JPMorgan had more than 400 AI and machine-learning use cases in production, including in marketing, fraud and risk. That figure is a company-reported count from 2024. It is not the current number. In the same letter he said AI might reduce certain job categories while creating others, and that the firm intended to retrain and redeploy affected employees.

How to read the warning
Dimon’s remarks are easiest to assess along four tensions. The table below sets out his position on each and what the material leaves open.
| Tension | Dimon’s position | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| Productivity and new jobs versus displacement | Expects productivity gains and new roles, and says some jobs will definitely disappear | How many jobs fall into each group, and where |
| Deployment pace versus worker adaptation | Says deployment may outpace adaptation and calls speed the key uncertainty | The actual timeline; no date is given |
| Company redeployment versus public policy | JPMorgan plans to support and redeploy staff; broader responses are possibilities | Which responses governments adopt, and how well they work |
| Security risks versus overregulation | Deepfakes, misinformation and cyber risks are real; respond without suppressing useful innovation | Where the line between prudent rules and overregulation should sit |
Questions to ask when a company describes AI-driven workforce change
Dimon’s framing gives readers a practical checklist. It applies to any employer, not only to JPMorgan:
Quick Recap
- Does the company say how many roles it expects AI to change, and which functions are affected?
- Does it describe what happens to displaced staff, such as redeployment, retraining or notice, and does it report outcomes?
- Is the timeline stated, or is the change described only as a direction?
- Are security risks such as deepfakes and cyber incidents named, along with a plan for handling incidents when they occur?
- Are hiring changes described as a shift in skills mix, or as a reduction in headcount?
