Josh Hart says he will not have the previously expected surgery on his right ring finger. In Fred Katz’s report for The Athletic, republished by NBA.com on Oct. 2, 2026, Hart said doctors recommended a joint replacement that he believes would end his playing career. He plans to continue playing through the pain and protect the finger with a splint or wrap.
What Josh Hart said about finger surgery
Hart said doctors told him this summer that he would need a full joint replacement. He has decided against the operation while he continues his basketball career, saying the procedure would end it. That career-ending implication is Hart’s account of what he was told; the published report does not quote a treating physician or provide an independent prognosis. NBA.com’s Oct. 2, 2026 report attributes the explanation to Hart.
Hart described the practical problem this way: “Grabbing a rebound, palming it, shooting, catching the ball, doing all that: You can’t do that.” He also said, “Some days, it’ll be good. Some days it’ll hurt to catch the ball.”

What happened to Hart’s finger
According to Katz’s report, Hart injured his right ring finger during the Knicks’ 2025 Eastern Conference finals against the Indiana Pacers. He had offseason surgery after the series, then aggravated the injury during a summer scrimmage. The plan at the start of the 2025–26 season was to play with protective gear and revisit treatment in the offseason.

An earlier ESPN report published Sept. 23, 2025 said Hart had reaggravated a right-finger injury after a procedure and planned to play with a splint. The October 2026 account describes the later decision not to have the expected follow-up operation.
How the injury affects him during play
Hart reported that the pain varies from day to day: catching the ball can hurt, while on other days closing his hand or making a fist is painful. The report also says the injury affected a nerve and that Hart had experienced numbness while playing earlier in the season. It does not establish a formal diagnosis or show that the finger caused a specific performance result.

For context only, a CBS Sports/RotoWire summary published Oct. 1, 2026 reported that Hart made 41.3% of his three-point attempts over 66 regular-season games in 2025–26. That season statistic does not establish how the finger affected his shooting.
Will Hart play with a splint?
Hart intends to keep playing and continue protecting the finger with a splint or wrap, according to Katz’s report. It does not identify a specific brand or model. The reporting establishes Hart’s stated plan at the time of publication; it does not confirm whether his symptoms or treatment plans have changed since then.
