To connect Korean company records with global entity data, start with the strongest identifiers available and treat names as a way to find candidates—not proof of identity. DART company-overview search supports company name, business registration number, and corporate registration number; an LEI is a separate identifier with its own reference data. The available sources do not establish a universal DART-to-LEI crosswalk or LEI coverage for all Korean companies.

What exactly are you trying to match?

Before joining records, define the entity represented by each one. A legal entity, a DART disclosure registrant, a listed security or issuer record, a branch, and a parent or subsidiary can be related without being interchangeable. A valid join depends on whether both records describe the same kind of thing.

  • Legal entity: the registered organization itself.
  • DART record: a company or filer represented in Korea’s electronic disclosure system.
  • Security or issuer: an instrument or the entity responsible for issuing it; it may not correspond one-to-one with every company profile.
  • Branch or group company: a unit or related entity that should not be merged with its parent solely because the names are similar.

What does a DART code identify?

DART is a disclosure filing and retrieval system, not a universal global entity registry. It enables listed companies and other filers to submit disclosure documents online and lets users retrieve them. Its company overview provides identifying and descriptive information for companies in DART’s records. DART’s system overview describes that disclosure role.

Do not assume that a DART company code is interchangeable with a business registration number, corporate registration number, security identifier, or LEI. Keep the original DART identifier supplied by your source dataset, record the field name and its documented meaning, and avoid assuming every DART code has a one-to-one global equivalent.

Storytelling with Data: A Data Visualization Guide for Business Professionals

How do you find a Korean company’s DART record?

  1. Open DART’s company-overview guide and use the company overview search.
  2. Search by the strongest available documented key: company name, business registration number, or corporate registration number. The guide lists all three. A partial company name can return names containing the text entered.
  3. Open the candidate company details and compare independent identifying fields, especially registration details, representative, and address.
  4. Retain the DART identifier from the record and note the source and field definition alongside it.

DART’s company unique-number lookup FAQ warns that identical company names can produce multiple candidates and advises checking all matching companies, including representative and address details. A name search is therefore discovery, not confirmation.

What does an LEI add?

An LEI is a distinct global identifier associated with reference data for an entity where one exists. GLEIF’s concatenated files collect LEI reference data from LEI issuing organizations, are available free of charge, and preserve an audit trail back to issuer data. GLEIF says the concatenated files are updated daily; its page describes Golden Copy and delta files as available in ready-to-use form three times daily. Check GLEIF’s file documentation for current file types and cadence.

When locating a possible LEI, assess the record rather than relying on the identifier alone: preserve the legal name, status, jurisdiction and registration details, and the record’s update context where available. The available sources do not establish what share of Korean companies have LEIs, so an absent LEI cannot by itself prove that a DART record is invalid or that two records are unrelated.

How should you connect DART records to LEIs?

Use a documented mapping only when its rules cover the exact identifier pair and record types you are joining. GLEIF hosts mapping resources, including a factsheet for OpenCorporates IDs to LEIs. That factsheet is an example of a curated mapping with eligibility criteria and identifier-equivalence rules—not evidence of a general DART-code-to-LEI mapping. Review the OpenCorporates-to-LEI factsheet for its specific scope and conditions before applying that mapping.

A practical matching workflow

  1. Define the record types. Decide whether the goal is to match legal entities, DART disclosure registrants, security issuers, branches, or parent and subsidiary records.
  2. Start with a source identifier. Prefer a documented registration identifier or other strong key. Use DART’s documented company-overview fields where relevant, and preserve the original identifier and source metadata.
  3. Check for an LEI separately. Search GLEIF reference data when the entity may have one. Store the LEI record’s legal name, status, jurisdiction and registration details, and update context.
  4. Apply crosswalks narrowly. Confirm that the mapping explicitly covers the identifiers and record types in your data. Record the mapping provider, criteria, and provenance.
  5. Use names to make a candidate set. Normalize spacing and legal-form suffixes cautiously; consider Hangul and Latin-script forms, transliteration, and former names. Do not treat normalization or a high name similarity score as proof.
  6. Compare independent evidence. Check registration identifiers, address, representative, jurisdiction, and temporal validity. DART specifically recommends representative and address details for same-name cases.
  7. Record the decision. Store source IDs, evidence fields, match method, review status, and date. Distinguish deterministic identifier joins from probabilistic name matches, and leave unresolved candidates unresolved.

Choosing a matching approach

Approach What it can establish Authority and coverage Best fit
DART company-overview lookup Finds candidate DART company records using name, business registration number, or corporate registration number; matching identity still needs validation. DART disclosure-system records; the guide documents lookup fields, not universal coverage or a global entity mapping. Manual discovery and verification of a DART record.
GLEIF LEI reference data Identifies an LEI record and its associated reference data where the entity has an LEI. Data sourced from LEI issuing organizations; it does not establish that every Korean company has an LEI. Checking and maintaining global LEI reference records.
Documented crosswalk Links identifiers only within the mapping’s stated eligibility rules and scope. Depends on the mapping provider and its criteria; the cited OpenCorporates mapping does not establish DART equivalence. Repeatable joins when the exact identifier pair is covered.
Name-based matching Produces possible matches, not conclusive identity by itself. Inferred from names; vulnerable to duplicate names, transliteration, former names, and legal-form variation. Candidate generation followed by attribute checks and review.

What to retain for auditability

  • The original identifiers and their source field names.
  • The record scope: legal entity, disclosure registrant, security issuer, branch, or related company.
  • Evidence used for the match, including registration fields and other independent attributes.
  • The crosswalk or matching method, its version or date where available, and the applicable rules.
  • The decision date, reviewer or review status, and whether the result is deterministic, probabilistic, or unresolved.
