Yes—but only one identified edition. AI-generated artwork appeared on the Italian cover of John Scalzi’s Starter Villain. Scalzi said he believed the image had been created by a human when he approved it, apologized after learning otherwise, and changed his contracts to require human-created cover art.
Which John Scalzi book had the AI-generated cover?
The disputed cover was for the Italian edition of Starter Villain. This is not evidence that all editions of the novel, or all of Scalzi’s books, used AI-generated artwork.
Starter Villain is also sold in physical editions. Pan Macmillan’s 2024 catalog lists a Tor paperback with ISBN 9781509835416 and a 31 October 2024 publication date; that listing is separate from the Italian edition at issue.

Human artists traced the cover image to stock artwork that Adobe Stock labeled “generated with AI.” Scalzi described the discovery on 21 June 2024, saying that “some ‘AI’-generated art” had appeared on the Italian cover.

That identification came from tracing the image and checking its stock-art provenance, rather than from an announcement that the Italian publisher had intentionally commissioned AI art.
Did Scalzi knowingly approve AI art?
According to Scalzi, no. He said his standing policy was not to accept AI-generated art for final covers, but that the policy had not been communicated effectively. When the image was presented for approval, he assumed it had been made by a human and approved it.

“When this art was presented to me for approval, I made the assumption that it was done by a human, and approved it. So, this is on me.”

He also said stock sites did not consistently label AI-generated material at the point when art was selected. In his account, the mistake could therefore have entered the process at several stages without bad faith by the Italian publisher or its art staff.

What did Scalzi do after finding out?
He accepted responsibility
Scalzi publicly acknowledged the error instead of presenting it as a deliberate change in policy. His stated policy remained that final cover art should not be AI-generated.
He required a contract change
In the immediate follow-up, he said he would direct his agent to require future book contracts to state that cover art must be created by a human artist. In an August 13, 2026 Bluesky follow-up, he said he had made that requirement a contract point so the same problem could not recur.
He apologized and donated
In that 2026 follow-up, Scalzi said he apologized and donated to an arts organization helping young artists. The available account does not identify the organization or disclose the donation amount.
What this incident shows about book-cover approvals
A general preference for human-made art is weaker than a written obligation backed by a verification process. Authors who want to exclude generative artwork should address both the contract and the production workflow.
Best Value
Put the requirement in writing
- State that all final cover artwork must be created by human artists.
- Define whether the restriction covers wholly generated images, generative edits, inpainting, image expansion, and AI-assisted compositing.
- Require the publisher to obtain the author’s written approval before changing the approved artist, image source, or production method.
- Specify what happens if a breach is discovered, such as replacement artwork, correction of future printings, or other agreed remedies.
Check provenance before approval
- Ask for the artist’s name, portfolio or agency record, and the source or license for every stock element.
- Check the stock provider’s current labeling and licensing information; do not rely only on a thumbnail or a verbal assurance.
- Keep a dated record of the supplied files, attribution details, and approval communications.
- Have a human artist or rights specialist examine suspicious details, especially hands, text, logos, repeated motifs, and inconsistent lighting.
Make responsibility clear across editions
International editions can involve a local publisher, separate art staff, and different stock-art vendors. A contract should identify who is responsible for checking provenance and should apply the human-art requirement to every language and territory edition, not only the primary market.

The established facts are narrow: an AI-labeled stock image appeared on the Italian Starter Villain cover; Scalzi said he approved it under the mistaken belief that it was human-made; and he responded with an apology, a donation supporting young artists, and stronger contract language.
There is no basis in this account for saying that Scalzi knowingly chose AI art or that every Starter Villain cover used it. The episode instead illustrates how an author’s policy can fail when it is not written into contracts and checked against the actual provenance of an image.
