John Cena says he will not perform in the ring again. In a TODAY Show interview, as quoted in an October 6, 2026 report, he said he and WWE agreed that stepping away at 49 was the right decision after what he described as 23 years of physical service. He may still appear for WWE in non-wrestling roles.
What John Cena said about returning to the ring
“I’m not going to perform again physically. There is no chance that I’ll perform again physically,” Cena said in the TODAY Show interview, according to an October 6, 2026 report. The report attributes the statement to Cena; the original interview recording or transcript was not independently accessible.
In the same quoted remarks, Cena said he and WWE had discussed his future and agreed that at 49 it was the right time to step away. He described his contribution as “23 years of physical service.” That is Cena’s phrasing, not a separate measurement of his WWE tenure.
Does this mean Cena will have no more WWE appearances?
No. The report distinguishes wrestling from other appearances: Cena may still return to WWE in non-wrestling roles, including as an ambassador. It also describes the John Cena Classic, planned for December, as a live event built around nostalgia for his WWE character, with the audience deciding the champion. These are reported plans and could change; they do not indicate that Cena will wrestle.

How his final match and earlier comments fit
The report says Cena retired after losing by submission to Gunther in Washington, D.C., on December 13. It describes his WWE spell as almost 25 years, a different figure from Cena’s own description of 23 years of physical service.
Before that final match, Cena told Good Morning America in June, as quoted in the same report, “There is no way.” The report says he then avoided speaking in absolutes because he did not want to close off an opportunity, while also saying he had made a promise to fans and did not want to disrespect them by returning for selfish gain. That earlier comment is historical context; it does not override his more recent stated position.
