Maine Wire reporter Joe Sokol said he “just almost got murdered” after a driver allegedly drove a vehicle toward him while he was reporting in Bangor. Sokol was not injured. The Maine Wire reported on October 2, 2026, that Bangor police had arrested a 38-year-old man and listed four charges; the outlet said the investigation was ongoing.
What happened to Joe Sokol in Maine?
According to The Maine Wire’s October 1 report, Sokol was standing on public property near Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center, also called Discovery House BR Inc., on Odlin Road. The outlet said a driver drove off the road and onto grass where Sokol was standing after a brief interaction. The alleged attempt to strike him was captured on video, the outlet reported, along with footage from a nearby business.

The Maine Wire said Sokol was not hurt and recorded the vehicle’s license plate. It identified the vehicle as a blue Jeep Compass. The outlet’s editor-in-chief, Steve Robinson, said the driver had identified Sokol as a journalist and intended to stop him from reporting; that is Robinson’s characterization of the incident, not an independently established finding.
What did Sokol say afterward?
In comments quoted by Hindustan Times, Sokol said: “I just almost got murdered. All caught on tape.” He also said: “This is what unchecked violence looks like.” The phrase “almost got murdered” is Sokol’s description of the incident, not a legal determination of what occurred.

Was anyone arrested?
Yes. In an October 2 update, The Maine Wire reported that Bangor police arrested Ryan Hayward, 38, of Bangor, on Friday. The outlet listed four charges:
- Reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon
- Criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon
- Driving to endanger
- Violating conditions of release
The Maine Wire said police had released no additional information and the investigation remained ongoing. The reported arrest and charges should be understood as allegations; the charges are not proof of guilt.

The Maine Wire said Hayward denied trying to murder Sokol in a phone interview with the outlet. It also reported that he acknowledged his actions were motivated by disagreement with Sokol’s reporting. Those comments are reported by The Maine Wire, which is directly connected to the incident through its reporter and coverage.

Why earlier reports said there had been no arrest
Hindustan Times reported that no arrest or criminal charges had been announced as of Thursday afternoon. That account preceded The Maine Wire’s October 2 arrest update, so the reports describe different points in time rather than necessarily conflicting information.
What is confirmed about the case status?
The Maine Wire’s October 2 report said the investigation was still ongoing. It did not include a police statement or court record, and no later official update is established in the reporting cited here. Sen. Susan Collins, quoted by The Maine Wire, called the incident “appalling” and said journalists should never be attacked for doing their jobs.
