Job tracking software keeps your applications, job details, stages, contacts, notes, and follow-up tasks in one place. A spreadsheet can do the same basic job if you prefer to manage it yourself. Choose the simplest system you will reliably update: software helps organize a search, but the available product descriptions do not establish that using a tracker leads to more interviews or offers.
What job tracking software does
A job tracker is a workspace for the roles you are considering or have applied to. Instead of searching email and browser history to remember what happened, you can keep the listing and its source alongside its application status, dates, notes, contacts, and next steps.
Depending on the product, the workspace may look like a stage-based board, a spreadsheet, or a combination. Some tools also store documents, log activity, provide job insights, or help with follow-up messages. These are organizational features; they do not guarantee a particular job-search result.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA simple workflow for tracking applications
You do not need a complicated system. For each role, capture enough detail to recognize the opportunity and know what to do next.
#1 Best Overall
- Save the listing. Record the role title, employer, link, and where you found it. Preserve important details before the posting disappears.
- Record the application date and status. Use clear stages such as saved, applied, interview, offer, and closed. Adapt the labels to your search.
- Add one next action and a date. For example, note when you intend to follow up or prepare for an interview. Update the entry when the action is complete.
- Keep useful context nearby. Add recruiter or hiring-contact details, relevant notes, and the resume or other document version associated with the role.
- Review and update the tracker. A stale list cannot reliably tell you what needs attention. Set a regular time to update statuses and upcoming actions.
This is a practical workflow, not a prescribed product setup. A spreadsheet can hold these fields just as a dedicated app can; the important part is consistently recording and updating them.
Dedicated tracker or spreadsheet?
A dedicated tracker can reduce manual entry and bring job-search-specific details together. A spreadsheet is flexible and may be all you need if you are comfortable maintaining it. Neither approach is established as universally better.
Rank #2
| What to compare | Dedicated job tracker | Spreadsheet-style workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Saving listings | Some tools support bookmarking or browser-extension capture; others also allow manual entry. | Usually requires entering or pasting details yourself. |
| Stages and follow-ups | May provide stage boards, activity timelines, reminders, or related tools; check the product’s actual features. | You choose the columns and can add dates or actions, but must maintain them. |
| Contacts, documents, and notes | Some trackers associate these with each opportunity. | Can be represented with columns or links, though related information may live elsewhere. |
| Views and portability | May include board or spreadsheet views, metrics, or CSV export, depending on the tool. | Offers a familiar grid and can be adapted to your preferred fields; export options depend on the spreadsheet service. |
| Limits and cost | Features and job limits may depend on the plan, and terms can change. | Depends on the spreadsheet service and how you choose to store or share the file. |
| Best fit | You want job-specific capture and related details in one place and will use the workflow. | You want a lightweight, customizable system and are willing to enter and update information manually. |

Plan details are time-sensitive and should not be treated as a measure of job-search effectiveness. In a Huntr Help Center plan page dated May 1, 2026, Basic is listed at $0 per month with tracking for up to 100 jobs. Pro is listed at $40 per month with unlimited job tracking; the page also lists $90 quarterly and $160 biannually. These are vendor-published terms, so confirm the current price, billing period, and included features on Huntr’s pricing help page.
Rank #4
Teal describes free tracking and displays a paid option at $13 per week on its job tracker page. Check the page for current availability and terms before choosing a plan. A free tier may be enough if it covers the number of roles and workflow features you need; compare the limits that affect your use rather than assuming a paid plan is necessary.

How to choose a system you will keep using
- Start with capture. If copying job details is the part you tend to skip, look for a tool with a listing-saving method that fits how you find jobs.
- Check the whole follow-up loop. Make sure you can record stages, dates, next actions, and relevant contacts in a way you will revisit.
- Choose the view that makes sense to you. A board can make stages visible; a grid can make dates and fields easy to scan. Some products provide both.
- Decide where context belongs. If you need contact details, notes, and documents attached to each opportunity, check whether the tool supports that or whether you prefer to keep those items separately.
- Check export and limits. If you may switch systems, find out whether you can export your data. Confirm job caps and billing terms against current vendor pages.
- Use the lightest workable system. If a spreadsheet remains current, there is no need to move. Consider a dedicated tracker when saving listings, organizing related details, or managing follow-ups becomes difficult to handle manually.
