A personal job-search dashboard can bring applications, follow-ups, and outcomes into one view. Muhammad Sohail built his own to solve a familiar problem: losing track of who had replied, which employers had gone quiet, and which roles he wanted. His implementation runs locally with Python and SQLite; it is an account of one person’s workflow, not proof that a dashboard improves anyone’s chance of getting hired.

What Sohail’s dashboard does

In his September 27, 2026 DEV Community account, Sohail describes a dashboard built as a fork of Pickle-Pixel/ApplyPilot. He says it runs on localhost, uses SQLite, and operates as one Python process without cloud sync. Those are the author’s descriptions, not the result of an independent security review.

The dashboard brings several parts of his search into one workflow:

  • A daily goal display; Sohail’s personal target is five applications per day.
  • A job pipeline with stages such as applied, interviewing, offer, rejected, and no deal.
  • A report tab showing pipeline-stage rates and daily application counts.
  • Skills analysis based on jobs he has scored at least 7.
  • Per-job tailored resume and cover-letter generation, with a note field to guide what the documents emphasize.
  • Resume variants for different countries.
  • Job highlights, tagged to-dos, and read-only Gmail inbox insights intended to match recruiter replies to jobs.

Sohail also describes a daily example in which he reached his five-application goal in 1 hour 46 minutes. That is one personal account, not a typical time estimate or a measure of job-search effectiveness.

Why the records matter as much as the dashboard

A tracker’s reports are only as meaningful as its definitions and underlying entries. Sohail’s article makes two useful design choices explicit: jobs that leave the active board remain in the database, and a rejection does not erase the application date. That lets the interface show current work without discarding the history needed to describe what happened.

Decide what each pipeline stage means before relying on rates. For example, distinguish an application sent from an interview invitation, and decide whether “no deal” means a role closed, an application withdrawn, or another outcome. Preserve dates and closed records if you want reports to reflect the full timeline rather than only active opportunities.

Keep the headline metric equally clear. Sohail writes, “The headline number is simply applications sent.” That avoids mixing applications with interviews, follow-ups, or other activity in a single count. His five-applications-a-day target is a personal goal, not a benchmark readers should adopt automatically.

Clean data before adding more automation

One concrete failure in Sohail’s account came from a scraper that stored the literal string “None,” which broke application links. The lesson is practical: validate imported fields and test links before building reports or automations on top of them. A dashboard can make bad data easier to see, but it does not make that data correct.

How this compares with a spreadsheet-and-automation workflow

A separate first-person account by Swaathy Kumaran describes combining Google Sheets, Airtable, and self-hosted n8n to reduce duplicate entry. These approaches illustrate different trade-offs; they are not a controlled comparison of products, cost, or outcomes.

Consideration Local Python and SQLite dashboard Sheets, Airtable, and self-hosted n8n
Setup and maintenance Requires a working local application and ongoing upkeep of its code and data. This reflects Sohail’s described implementation. Requires configuring connected services and maintaining the self-hosted automation workflow, as described by Kumaran.
Where data is stored Sohail says the dashboard runs on localhost with SQLite and no cloud sync. The account uses Google Sheets and Airtable alongside self-hosted n8n; storage and processing are distributed across that setup.
Customization A fork gives its owner the option to change the application, subject to the work required to maintain those changes. Spreadsheets, database fields, and automation flows can be arranged around a workflow, with configuration effort.
Automation and integrations The described dashboard includes tailored documents and read-only Gmail insights that match replies to jobs. Kumaran’s workflow uses n8n to reduce duplicate data entry between services.
Correcting records Records in the database can be edited, but the account does not specify a formal correction or audit process. Records can be corrected in the relevant sheet or database; the account does not specify an audit or conflict-resolution process.

The table summarizes what the two authors describe, not a feature audit. A vendor, Develop21, also describes tools for planning searches, capturing opportunities, assessing fit, and preparing documents; those are vendor claims, so check its current feature and privacy information before making a decision.

Choose the workflow you will actually maintain

A custom local tool may suit someone who wants control over fields and reports, is comfortable maintaining software, and prefers not to sync the dashboard to the cloud. A connected spreadsheet-and-automation setup may suit someone who already works across those services and wants to reduce repeated entry. Neither is automatically simpler or more private in every configuration: the number of services, how they are configured, and where email or application data is processed all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever approach you choose, start with the minimum useful record: employer, role, application date, status, next action, and a link. Add scoring, document generation, email matching, or analytics only when those additions solve a real problem in your own process. Tailoring documents and matching replies can organize work; neither guarantees stronger applications or a job offer.
