You can make a resume stand out without making it hard to read or submit. For a career change, the strongest approach is to translate real experience and projects into evidence that matches the target role, keep the application document simple enough to scan, and use a portfolio or project page when the work needs more room to speak for itself.
What “a resume that doesn’t look like a resume” should mean
It should mean a resume that tells your story in a way a hiring reader can understand—not a document that hides your history behind unusual design. A non-linear path is not self-explanatory to a stranger. Make the connection between your previous work, current projects, and the role explicit instead of expecting a recruiter to infer it.
The phrase is also the title of a September 18, 2026, first-person essay by Mika Flowers on DEV Community. Flowers describes moving toward software work after eight years managing a retail floor and earlier front-desk work. For a software engineering application, Flowers reframed a Linux project by explaining what it did, how it was tested and packaged, and how it continued to develop in response to user feedback. Flowers said the job search had not yet led to a hire when the essay was written. It is an individual account of translating experience, not evidence that a particular resume style guarantees interviews or offers.

Start with the role, then build the bridge
Read the job posting before deciding what belongs on the page. Identify its required work, skills, and outcomes, then choose the parts of your experience that genuinely demonstrate them. University of Pennsylvania Career Services recommends making a resume specific to the opportunity and emphasizing relevant or transferable skills.

- Identify the target evidence. Note the capabilities and responsibilities the posting emphasizes.
- Select truthful examples. Use relevant work, projects, training, or other experience you can explain and support.
- State the connection. Describe what you did and why it demonstrates a capability the new role needs. Do not rely on the reader to connect a retail, service, or administrative role to a technical or creative position unaided.
- Tailor the wording and emphasis. Give the most relevant evidence prominence for that application without claiming skills, responsibilities, or results you do not have.
For example, a career changer who managed a retail floor should not relabel that job as software experience. If accurate and relevant, they might explain how they coordinated work, handled operational problems, or responded to customer feedback—and separately describe a software project in terms of its function, testing, packaging, and subsequent changes. The bridge is the explanation of relevance, not a false claim that the two jobs were the same.
Choose a format for the reader and the submission path
There is no single format that is best for every applicant or employer. Compare the options by whether they show evidence for the role, how quickly a person can find that evidence, and how reliably the document may be read by the employer’s application system.

UT Austin CNS Career Services advises tailoring resumes to each role and avoiding tables, columns, graphics, and objects for ATS submissions. Because systems differ, follow the employer’s file and application instructions rather than assuming that a design will either work everywhere or fail everywhere. A clear, restrained application resume with a portfolio link is a practical way to preserve readability while giving technical or visual work space to be evaluated.

Put visual or technical proof where it can be assessed
If the role values finished work, the resume can point to samples rather than trying to contain them all. Use a portfolio, project page, GitHub profile, or personal website when it is relevant to the field and gives the reader useful evidence. Choose samples that support the claims in the resume, and make the relationship between each sample and your contribution clear.

Keep the resume useful on its own: it should still identify your experience and make your fit legible even if a reader does not open a link. A portfolio is an additional place to show the work, not a substitute for an employer’s requested resume, application form, or work sample.

Check the resume before submitting
- Does the document make the target role and your relevant evidence easy to find?
- Have you explained the connection between a non-linear work history, your projects, and the role instead of implying experience you do not have?
- Are the dates and sequence of your work history still clear, including if you use a functional or combination format?
- Does the application follow the employer’s requested file type and formatting instructions?
- If you include a portfolio or project link, does it lead to relevant work that helps demonstrate your claims?
