Jio has proposed a low Earth orbit (LEO) network of about 1,600 satellites, supported by 23 planned ground stations, to extend connectivity to remote parts of India. The proposal was presented at India Mobile Congress 2026; it is not a deployed network, and Jio did not announce a launch date at the event. The intended coverage—including villages, islands, border areas and maritime regions—is an ambition, not a service guarantee. (Mint; Moneycontrol)

What Jio announced—and what is still only planned

At India Mobile Congress 2026, Jio presented a proposal for approximately 1,600 LEO satellites and 23 ground stations. The figures describe planned infrastructure, not satellites or stations confirmed as operational. Reporting on the event says Jio gave no launch timeline. (Mint; Moneycontrol)

Jio’s stated approach is to make satellite connectivity complement its mobile and fibre networks, rather than replace them. Satellite links could help reach places where extending terrestrial infrastructure is difficult; the proposal does not establish how or when service would be delivered to any particular location. What the 23 ground stations are meant to do

Ground stations provide the terrestrial connection between satellites and networks on the ground. Jio says its planned Indian stations are intended to support partner satellite constellations as well as future Jio satellites. That makes the ground infrastructure relevant to Jio’s broader satellite strategy, not just the proposed LEO system. (Mint; Reliance Industries, 2026 shareholder remarks)

The announcement does not specify station locations, deployment dates, capacity, or how the stations would connect to customer equipment. Those details would be needed to assess the network’s eventual reach and performance.

Remote-area coverage is a goal, not a measured result

Jio’s presentation was reported as describing coverage ambitions for more than 600,000 villages, remote islands, border outposts and maritime areas, as well as land and sea more broadly. These are goals attributed to the company, not independently verified coverage maps or guarantees that service will be available across those places. (Mint; Moneycontrol)

Satellite connectivity can be useful where fibre, microwave links or mobile infrastructure are difficult to extend. In a January 2026 written Rajya Sabha reply, the Ministry of Communications described satellite-based services as a way to provide connectivity in rural, underserved and unserved areas, including remote, coastal, border and mountainous regions. That explains the potential use case; it does not confirm Jio’s proposed network can already serve those areas. (Ministry of Communications, 29 January 2026)

How the LEO proposal differs from JioSpaceFiber

Jio’s LEO proposal should not be confused with JioSpaceFiber. In October 2023, Jio reported a JioSpaceFiber demonstration that used SES O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites in medium Earth orbit (MEO), not Jio’s proposed LEO constellation. Jio named demonstration locations in Gir, Gujarat; Korba, Chhattisgarh; Nabrangpur, Odisha; and ONGC-Jorhat, Assam. This is historical company-reported demonstration information, not evidence that the proposed LEO service is commercially available. (Reliance Jio, 27 October 2023)

Jio has also described a parallel path: use capacity from global satellite providers to support service while it evaluates a sovereign constellation and develops ground infrastructure. In other words, partner capacity and a future Jio-owned LEO system are related parts of a strategy, but they are not the same service or network. (Reliance Industries, 2026 shareholder remarks)

What the licence does—and does not—tell customers

The Ministry of Communications said on 29 January 2026 that the Department of Telecommunications had issued Jio Satellite Communications Limited a Unified License authorization for GMPCS service. This is relevant regulatory context, but a licence alone does not establish that a particular satellite system has spectrum assignments, is operational, or is ready for customers. It also does not announce consumer plans, compatible equipment, pricing or a launch date. (Ministry of Communications, 29 January 2026)

When will Jio’s satellite internet launch?

There is no launch date established by the event reporting. The 2026 presentation announced a proposed constellation and ground-station plan, not a consumer launch. Jio has not established in the cited material when the LEO network will be deployed or when customers could order a service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before the proposal can be assessed as a consumer internet option, Jio would need to make key details public, including deployment milestones, service areas, customer equipment, plan terms and pricing. Until then, the practical distinction is between a stated infrastructure ambition and a service that customers can actually sign up for.
