As of October 7, 2026, the documented UPI tap-payment option is an NFC-enabled Android phone—not a confirmed Jio glasses or smartwatch product. Google Pay explains how to pay by tapping an eligible phone at a merchant’s UPI NFC acceptance point. NPCI has publicized a UPI smart-glasses demonstration, but that announcement does not establish a retail Jio product. The official sources reviewed do not confirm a supported smartwatch model and app combination.
Can I make UPI payments with Jio glasses?
There is no documented Jio UPI-glasses payment product in the official material cited here. Jio’s JioDive FAQ describes JioDive as a phone-mounted VR headset that works with a compatible Android or iOS phone and the JioImmerse app. It does not describe JioDive as payment-enabled smart glasses.
Separately, NPCI said it introduced UPI Smart Glasses at Global Fintech Fest 2025, describing QR scanning and voice authentication. That is an announcement of a demonstration; it does not identify a purchasable consumer model, connect the product to Jio, or establish general retail availability. See NPCI’s announcement.

Can I pay with UPI using a smartwatch in India?
The official sources reviewed do not establish ordinary UPI payments from a smartwatch or name a supported watch, UPI app, and bank combination. That is a limit of the available documentation, not proof that no watch could ever support UPI. Compatibility and features may vary by device, app, bank, and later product releases.

NPCI’s Tap & Pay materials refer to NFC-capable mobiles and devices, while Google Pay’s documented UPI flow specifically requires an NFC-enabled Android device. How does documented UPI Tap & Pay work?
Google Pay documents a phone-based flow that requires an NFC-enabled Android device and an active UPI payment method. The user opens Tap & Pay, enters an amount, taps the merchant’s receiver, selects a payment method, and authenticates as required. Google lists UPI NFC tags, QR stickers that include an NFC tag, and Smart Soundpods with UPI NFC tags as merchant acceptance points. Look for the Tap & Pay symbol; a QR code by itself does not necessarily mean tap acceptance is available.

- Check that the Android phone has NFC and that an active UPI payment method is set up.
- At a participating merchant, open Google Pay’s Tap & Pay flow and enter the amount.
- Tap the phone against the merchant’s UPI NFC receiver, then choose a payment method and authenticate as prompted.
In this arrangement, the phone is the payer’s device. The NFC tag, Smart QR, or Soundpod is merchant-side acceptance equipment; buying a merchant tag is not a substitute for a personal UPI-enabled device. NPCI says Tap & Pay captures the payee UPI ID/VPA using NFC and limits access to NFC-capable mobiles and devices.

What to check before trying a tap payment
- Confirm that the phone is NFC-enabled and the payment app offers the UPI Tap & Pay feature.
- Check that the merchant’s receiver supports UPI NFC; an ordinary QR display may support scan-and-pay without supporting tap.
- Follow the app’s current authentication and payment rules. NPCI describes UPI Lite as an option for transactions up to ₹500 when enabled, and says larger amounts require UPI PIN authentication; app flows and limits can change.
- Do not assume a glasses or watch announcement means the product is on sale or that your account, bank, and app are supported.
