Jimmie Johnson says Legacy Motor Club does not have an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR). He described the team as building its own aerodynamic and chassis engineering capabilities by hiring specialists—a statement about Legacy’s team-level relationship with JGR, not its separate partnership with Toyota.

What Johnson said about JGR

In a report published October 1, 2026, Yahoo Sports/MotorBiscuit attributed these comments to Johnson in an interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio: “We don’t have an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing, and we’ve really been trying to build a partnership with them and do that by hiring the right people and having the right aero engineering group, the chassis engineering group, all these different layers.” The report says SiriusXM NASCAR Radio posted the interview on X; the quotation is reproduced through that secondary report.

Johnson’s wording describes a goal of developing Legacy’s internal engineering capacity. It does not, by itself, establish that the team has ended every form of technical cooperation with other organizations or explain precisely what it means by “alliance.”

How that fits with earlier reports of JGR cooperation

Sports Business Journal reported on June 1, 2026, that Legacy was working with JGR on aerodynamic research and development while Johnson wanted the team to become independent in the long term rather than rely on a costly alliance with Toyota’s flagship team. The June report concerns a specific area of R&D; Johnson’s October statement says Legacy does not have an alliance with JGR.

The available reporting does not specify what the aerodynamic work covered, whether it was a formal or informal arrangement, or when it ended. The two accounts therefore should not be collapsed into a claim that Legacy never worked with JGR—or that all technical cooperation has stopped. They describe dated information about different aspects of the relationship.

Legacy’s Toyota partnership is separate

Toyota announced in May 2023 that Legacy’s partnership with the manufacturer would begin with the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season. That manufacturer relationship is distinct from an alliance between two racing teams: Toyota’s announcement also identified JGR and 23XI Racing as its existing Cup Series team partners. Legacy can be partnered with Toyota without having a team alliance with JGR.

What Legacy is building toward

More in-house engineering

Johnson pointed to aero and chassis engineering as areas where Legacy is hiring to build capability. That describes the intended approach, not a measured result: the cited sources provide no statistic showing how independent Legacy has become or quantifying any competitive gain from the hiring plan.

A third Cup car in 2027

NASCAR reported in March 2026 that Johnson confirmed Legacy planned to field a third car in the 2027 Cup season. He said adding a car could help accelerate the team’s development. In its October 1 report, Yahoo Sports/MotorBiscuit said Josh Berry was to replace John Hunter Nemechek in the No. 42, Erik Jones was to remain in the No. 43, and Riley Herbst was to drive the No. 84. Those driver assignments are time-sensitive plans reported on that date.

Investment and performance strategy

A RACER feature published in August 2026 described Legacy’s work on a strategic ownership group that included athletes, celebrities and other investors. Team president Michael Guttilla said the team asks whether an initiative “help[s] us go faster.” The feature framed fan experience and business connections as ways to attract resources for team performance; it did not establish a direct effect on results.

What Johnson said about the team’s progress

The October report also quoted Johnson describing Legacy’s development: “When you watch the big teams like Hendrick, Gibbs, Penske, everybody finds a challenging spot in the year and we have as well, but we are building.” It said he expected the team to take another step in 2027, regarded wins as an appropriate expectation for that season, and believed Legacy could still win a race in 2026. Those are Johnson’s expectations as reported on October 1, not guarantees of results.
