The Jewish Greens said in an October 2, 2026 briefing that its members are divided over the Green Party motion “Zionism is Racism” and that the group has no official, conclusive position. That is a change from February, when it urged opposition to the motion; an August interim statement had already withdrawn that collective stance.
What is the motion, and what is known about its status?
The motion is part of the Green Party of England and Wales’s Spring Conference 2026 agenda. The final agenda lists “Zionism is Racism” as motion E12. The Jewish Greens’ October survey briefing refers to it as E02. These are the identifiers used by the respective documents; the available sources do not explain the change.
Yachad said the motion was scheduled for the Brighton conference on October 2–4, 2026. The sources available here do not establish whether it was debated or what happened to it. It should not be described as passed, rejected, amended, or adopted as party policy on this evidence. Green Party Spring Conference 2026 final agenda; Yachad statement, September 23, 2026.
What does the Jewish Greens say about its members’ views?
In its October 2 briefing, Jewish Greens said its survey followed an influx of new members and extended discussions that revealed more disagreement than the group’s February position had reflected. It described its membership as predominantly non-Zionist and/or anti-Zionist, with a significant minority identifying as Zionist.

- Used Book in Good Condition
On whether Jewish Greens should collectively oppose the motion, the average response was 5.1 on a 0–10 scale. The group interpreted that result as showing a split down the middle. Its briefing also reported:
- 53% agreed and 47% disagreed that passing the motion could make discrimination against Jews within the party more likely.
- 47% strongly disagreed that the statement “Zionism is racism” discriminates against Jews, while 25% strongly agreed.
- 68% were concerned about the motion’s potential effect on the party’s electoral prospects.
- 70% strongly agreed that Palestine Action should be de-proscribed.
- 64% strongly agreed that Palestinians have a right to resist apartheid, occupation and genocide by “all available means within international law.”
- 50% strongly agreed that UK citizens who fight with the Israeli military should face criminal prosecution, while 17% strongly disagreed.
- 67% strongly disagreed with the assertion that anti-Zionism is antisemitism.
These are results reported by Jewish Greens for its own survey, not estimates of Jewish people or Green Party members generally. The available account does not give the respondent count, field dates, sampling method, or full questionnaire wording, so the percentages should be read within that limitation. Jewish Greens, survey briefing, October 2, 2026.
Why do members disagree?
The disagreement involves both the meaning of Zionism and what the motion would mean in party life. In its August interim briefing, Jewish Greens described some members’ concern that the motion could expose Jews to discrimination because Jews may be more likely to identify as Zionists or have ties to institutions such as synagogues. Other members, according to the group, reject the idea that the motion targets Jews or Zionists, arguing that it targets Zionism as the motion defines it.

The October briefing said the most prominent concerns in the survey were not primarily about effects on Jewish members, but about policy and the party as a whole. That account helps explain why a group can report strong concern about the motion’s electoral or policy implications while also remaining divided over whether it discriminates against Jews.

Yachad’s objection
Yachad opposes the motion. It defines Zionism at its most basic as the belief that Jews have a right to self-determination, and argues that labelling it racist risks stigmatizing Jewish national aspirations. Yachad says a party can oppose the devastation in Gaza, settlement expansion, and settler violence while also defending the rights and security of Israelis and Palestinians. These are Yachad’s arguments, not an agreed definition or conclusion shared by every Jewish Green. Yachad statement, September 23, 2026.
The case for treating the motion as a critique of an ideology
Greens for Palestine presents a different reading: it says the motion’s definition of Zionism is narrower than the range of meanings found in Zionist discourse, and argues for its own interpretation of the text. This is the organization’s characterization; the available material does not provide enough detail to expand on its reasoning. Greens for Palestine press material.

How did the Jewish Greens’ position change?
- February 2026: Jewish Greens collectively opposed the motion. Its statement argued that the motion went beyond opposition to Israeli government actions, could make Jews feel unwelcome, and risked party structures acting against people considered Zionists. That was its position at the time, not its current collective stance. Jewish Greens, February 2026 statement.
- August 2026: An interim briefing said members were very divided and withdrew the group’s February collective opposition. It stated: “Our members are very divided over this motion, and as a result we do not have an official position on it.” Jewish Greens, August 10, 2026 interim briefing.
- October 2, 2026: The survey briefing described the split and confirmed that the group had no official conclusive position. Jewish Greens, October 2, 2026 survey briefing.
What can be concluded about the controversy?
The clearest conclusion is about the Jewish Greens itself: its collective opposition in February gave way to a reported division by August, and its October briefing did not announce a consensus. The debate among members turns on whether the motion is understood as a critique of Zionism as a political ideology or as language that risks stigmatizing Jews whose identity or beliefs include Zionism, alongside broader concerns about party policy and electoral prospects.
The survey figures illuminate that internal disagreement but cannot establish what Jewish people or Green Party members overall think. Nor do the sources cited here settle the motion’s conference outcome. The October briefing’s reported position is the latest one established here.
