If you pay for Plex while Jellyfin is free, the difference that may matter most is streaming your personal videos away from home. Plex’s current rules make remote playback subscription-gated in affected apps; Jellyfin’s appeal alone does not remove that Plex restriction. The title does not identify the author’s actual reason for paying, so remote streaming is the strongest documented explanation—not a claim about anyone’s personal usage.
What you can use Plex for free
Plex says its server software and local-network playback of personal media are free. Its own description is: “The basic functionality of Plex is completely free, which includes local playback of personal content from your Plex Media Server, as well as our ad-supported on demand and Live TV (from Plex).” (Plex: Free vs Paid.)
The distinction is between watching your personal video library on your home network and remotely streaming it. Plex’s free-versus-paid policy treats the latter differently in apps covered by its remote-playback rules.
Why remote Plex video may require payment
Plex says the new requirements began April 29, 2025. In affected apps, remote playback of personal video requires at least one of these: the server administrator has Plex Pass, the viewer has Plex Pass, or the viewer has Remote Watch Pass. Plex’s update page records an April 29, 2026 expansion of platform coverage. This is a changing policy, not a universal statement that every Plex app is affected in the same way at all times.
Who needs to pay: Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass
The choice depends on whether you are enabling remote viewing for a server’s users or only for your own account. Plex Pass on the server administrator’s account allows other accounts accessing that server to stream remotely. Remote Watch Pass applies to the account that holds it; it does not unlock remote playback for other full Plex accounts using the server. (Plex support: Subscriptions and remote access.)

Plex announced introductory Remote Watch Pass prices of $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year in 2025. Those are historical launch prices, not verified current prices; check Plex’s subscription information for the offer available to your account and region. (Plex’s 2025 update.)
What still has to be set up for remote access
A pass addresses Plex’s subscription requirement; it does not configure your home network. Plex’s setup guidance calls for enabling Remote Access and signing in to a Plex account. Plex may configure access automatically through UPnP or NAT-PMP on a compatible router. If automatic configuration does not work, manual port forwarding is the documented alternative. - Sign in to Plex with the account associated with the server.
- In Plex Media Server, open Settings > Remote Access and enable remote access.
- Allow Plex to try automatic router configuration using UPnP or NAT-PMP.
- If automatic configuration fails, follow Plex’s manual port-forwarding instructions for your router and server.
Does Jellyfin solve the same problem?
Jellyfin is a free alternative with its own client ecosystem, but the available documentation does not establish a like-for-like verdict on remote-access setup difficulty, privacy, or reliability compared with Plex. Its clients page documents available clients; it is not evidence that Jellyfin remote streaming is always simpler or better. (Jellyfin clients.)
So the practical comparison is narrower: Plex documents a subscription gate for remote personal-video playback on affected apps, while local playback remains free. Whether Jellyfin is the better fit depends on your client devices and how you want to provide remote access; the cited client information alone cannot settle those setup or performance trade-offs.
