JDA Software acquired Blue Yonder in 2018 to add artificial intelligence and machine learning to its retail and supply-chain software. The deal’s price was not disclosed in the official announcements cited here. JDA later adopted the Blue Yonder name, and Panasonic’s subsequent investments and takeover agreement were separate transactions.

What did JDA acquire in Blue Yonder?

Blue Yonder was a Karlsruhe, Germany-based provider of AI and machine-learning solutions for retail and supply-chain operations. JDA described the company as having a large data-science organization and customers including WM Morrisons and OTTO. Its technology was intended to strengthen JDA’s strategy for an autonomous supply chain—connecting planning, execution, labor management, and omnichannel delivery.

When the acquisition was completed, JDA presented the combined offering as an end-to-end supply-chain solution. Blue Yonder’s AI/ML capabilities would be incorporated into JDA’s Luminate cognitive SaaS platform to support planning, analysis, execution, and delivery. JDA’s acquisition announcement and completion announcement describe the strategic rationale.

When did JDA acquire Blue Yonder?

JDA announced a definitive agreement to acquire Blue Yonder in 2018; the announcement record is dated July 2 and September 12. The deal was subject to competition-agency approval. JDA announced completion on September 12, 2018.

The official materials cited for the deal do not disclose what JDA paid. Panasonic’s later valuation of Blue Yonder should not be mistaken for JDA’s 2018 purchase price.

Why did JDA rename itself Blue Yonder?

On February 11, 2020, JDA announced that its company name would become Blue Yonder, effective immediately. It said the new corporate brand reflected its cloud transformation and product roadmap. The company’s CEO, Girish Rishi, said the brand needed to reflect the transformation the business had undergone. The announcement also described Blue Yonder as a company JDA had acquired in August 2018. Read the rebrand announcement.
