JBL Cove is a new three-speaker Wi-Fi audio system, but early listening reports do not yet establish that it sounds better than Sonos. The lineup spans a compact home speaker, a battery-powered portable model and a larger flagship. JBL announced it on September 1, 2026; the available third-party coverage is preview material, not a completed comparative review.

What is JBL Cove?

JBL Cove is a whole-home Wi-Fi speaker system announced by HARMAN on September 1, 2026. Its three models can be used individually, paired for stereo or grouped for multi-room playback through the JBL One app, according to JBL’s launch announcement.

The range is designed around different rooms and listening habits rather than three identical speakers at different sizes. JBL lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect across the system. It also lists Alexa Built-In, access to Alexa+, and Spotify Tap through the Moment button. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not independent compatibility tests.

JBL Cove models compared

Model Speaker configuration Portability and ratings Dolby Atmos Announced US price

Cove P1 Three 30 mm tweeters, one 20 mm up-firing tweeter and one 4-inch woofer Up to 14 hours rated battery life; IP56; recharge dock Yes $399.95
Cove X1 Four 30 mm tweeters, including one up-firing, and two 4-inch woofers No battery or IP rating listed by JBL Yes $449.95

Specifications and announced US launch prices are from HARMAN/JBL’s September 1, 2026 announcement; the P1’s “up to 14 hours” is a manufacturer rating, not an independently measured result. JBL’s US shop also displays those prices, but stock and retail prices can change.

Cove M1: compact room speaker

The M1 is the smallest model, aimed at a compact single-room setup or a stereo pair. JBL lists stereo pairing and multi-room use, but no Dolby Atmos, battery or IP rating for it.

Cove P1: portable option

The P1 is the lineup’s battery-powered speaker. Its up-firing tweeter, Atmos support, charging dock and IP56 rating distinguish it from the M1. The IP56 rating and battery specification are JBL claims; they do not by themselves establish how it will perform in every outdoor setting.

Cove X1: flagship for a larger setup

The X1 has two 4-inch woofers and four 30 mm tweeters, one of them up-firing. JBL describes it as a 3D room-filling Wi-Fi speaker and lists Dolby Atmos support. That positioning and its driver configuration do not substitute for independent sound measurements.

What early listening reports say—and do not say

At a New York City demonstration on September 1, 2026, SoundGuys writer Dave Carr said the P1 stood out for versatility. He reported that Atmos tracks had noticeable spatial depth on the P1 and X1, and that a stereo pair of M1 speakers sounded wide to him. These were impressions from a demo, not controlled measurements. Carr said there was not enough time to assess automatic room calibration, Constant Sound Field or AI Sound Boost. See SoundGuys’ initial impressions.

Erin Bashford’s September 30, 2026 Tom’s Guide preview describes initial setup, physical controls and moving playback between rooms or groups. Bashford also says proper testing is still to come; it should not be read as a completed review. The preview is at Tom’s Guide.

JBL lists automatic room calibration, Constant Sound Field and AI Sound Boost on all three speakers. The cited early listening accounts do not establish how well those features work in ordinary homes, or whether the speakers outperform competing systems.

Can JBL Cove work with Sonos or a JBL soundbar?

The launch information documents integration with compatible JBL Bar Series MK2 soundbars, not Sonos. JBL specifically says the Cove M1 and P1 can be added as rear channels. Its launch table describes X1 support with Bar MK2 for multi-room music only. Confirm the precise speaker and soundbar combination before buying for a home-theater setup; the announcement does not establish Sonos compatibility.

JBL calls its room-to-room playback feature “Music Follows Me”: press and hold the Moment button to move playback. Tom’s Guide describes a “Follow me” function and a separate button feature for switching between groups. The exact behavior should be checked against the current app and speaker instructions.

Is JBL Cove a reason to choose it over Sonos?

Not on the evidence available so far. Cove and Sonos occupy the multi-room audio category, but the cited coverage does not include a controlled Cove-versus-Sonos listening test, a reliability comparison or a completed review. The “Sonos in its sights” framing is competitive positioning, not proof that Cove is the better system.

Use practical fit to narrow the choice: the M1 is the compact option, the P1 is the only model with a stated battery, dock and IP56 rating, and the X1 is the larger flagship. If you already own a compatible JBL Bar Series MK2 soundbar, the specified integration may matter. If your decision depends on sound quality, room correction or reliability versus Sonos, wait for full testing rather than treating a launch demo as a verdict.
