Jarred pesto is the quicker, ready-to-use option; homemade pesto lets you choose the ingredients and tune the flavor. Neither is a universal winner: taste depends on the recipe and brand, while cost depends on local prices, what you already have, and how much you use.
How do jarred and homemade pesto differ?
Traditional pesto commonly combines basil, pine nuts, garlic, a hard cheese such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino, and extra virgin olive oil. A commercial jar may use a different balance or different ingredients, so the label—not the word “pesto”—tells you what is in the product you are buying.
| What matters | Homemade pesto | Jarred pesto |
|---|---|---|
| Flavor | You can adjust the basil, garlic, cheese, nuts, and oil to suit your preference. | Flavor varies by brand and recipe; check the actual jar rather than assuming all products taste alike. |
| Ingredients | You choose the ingredients and proportions. | Ingredients and their proportions vary between products. |
| Cost | Depends on local ingredient prices, the amounts used, pantry staples already on hand, and what happens to leftovers. | Depends on the local price and jar size; compare the cost per comparable quantity. |
| Effort | Requires ingredients and preparation. | Ready to open and portion, with no batch preparation. |
Which tastes better?
There is no dependable rule that homemade always tastes better. In one small Bon Appétit comparison, tasters described the homemade batch as brighter in basil and stronger in garlic, while the store-bought sauce came across as cheesier and nuttier. Two tasters preferred the homemade version, one preferred the jarred version, and another was ambivalent. Those impressions apply to the particular recipe, product, and panel—not to every pesto or palate. Bon Appétit’s comparison
Jarred pesto can also do well in a blind tasting. Which? reported that 71 tasters tested 10 green pestos, with Filippo Berio Classic Pesto topping that test. It is evidence about that group of products and tasters, not a universal brand ranking or a guarantee of availability in other markets. Which?’s blind taste test

What should you check on a pesto jar?
Compare the ingredient list and, where provided, the proportion of basil. CHOICE’s test of 13 Australian supermarket pestos, updated in 2020, found basil levels from 12.5% to 58%. Eleven of the 13 products contained cashews, while five contained pine nuts; sunflower oil was the main oil in most of the tested products. These figures describe that dated Australian sample, not all products currently sold. CHOICE’s pesto buying guide
- Basil: Check its place in the ingredients and any stated percentage if you want a basil-forward sauce.
- Nuts: Look for the specific nut used, especially if you have an allergy or are avoiding a particular ingredient.
- Oil and cheese: Check which oils and cheeses the product uses if those ingredients matter to your taste or diet.
- Dietary needs: Read the full label for ingredients and allergen information; do not infer suitability from the product name.
Is pesto cheaper to make or buy?
The available published prices are historical examples from different markets and quantities, so they cannot establish which option is cheaper for you now. Bon Appétit’s author reported spending about $10 on ingredients for 1.5 cups of homemade pesto and $5.49 for a 3/4-cup store-bought container. CHOICE reported $4.90 for a 190 g jar, or $2.58 per 100 g, for its named top-scoring product; its price was based on Sydney stores in May and June 2020. Neither comparison should be treated as a current general price. Bon Appétit; CHOICE

For a useful comparison, check current local prices for a similar amount of each option. For homemade, count the quantities you will actually use—not necessarily the full price of packages if some ingredients are already in your kitchen—and consider whether unused ingredients or pesto will go to waste. For jarred pesto, compare the package price by weight or by the amount your recipe needs.
Which option is more convenient?
A jar saves the work of assembling and preparing the ingredients, so it is practical when you need pesto quickly or want a pantry-ready option. Homemade pesto takes preparation and cleanup. Bon Appétit’s author reported spending 40 minutes on a batch, including 15 minutes cleaning very sandy basil; that is one person’s experience, not a standard time estimate. The actual effort for your batch will depend on the ingredients and preparation involved.

Choose homemade when ingredient control or a particular fresh basil-and-garlic balance matters more than the extra work. Choose jarred when ready-to-use convenience matters most, then select a product whose label and flavor suit the dish. If neither is a clear preference, compare a specific jar with the homemade recipe you would actually make, using current local prices and comparable quantities.
