Jamie Dimon warned that heavy government borrowing and spending on artificial intelligence could compete for capital and eventually raise companies’ borrowing costs. He described a possible chain of events—not a fixed forecast or a prediction that a credit crisis is imminent. Bloomberg’s Oct. 6, 2026, interview listing says he also discussed the global bond selloff and UK banks, but it does not provide a transcript or detail his comments about UK lenders.

What Dimon said about AI spending and corporate borrowing

Speaking with Bloomberg’s Tom Mackenzie at JPMorgan’s Tech Stars Conference in London, Dimon described how competition for funding could reach corporate borrowers. Yahoo Finance’s Oct. 6 report quotes him: “There will be a point where the market will ask for more and more and more, and yeah, at one point that’ll feed into corporate debt, corporate credit spreads, and things like that, which is how it normally happens.”

In practical terms, if governments and companies seeking to finance AI projects compete for a finite pool of investment, lenders and investors may demand higher returns. Those higher required returns can feed through to corporate debt costs and credit spreads—the extra yield investors demand to hold a company’s bonds rather than safer government debt. Dimon’s reported comment describes that potential transmission mechanism; it does not specify when it might occur or how large the effect would be.

Why AI investment is also a credit-market story

The Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee said in its September 2026 record that financing for AI-related investment was growing rapidly. It warned that expectations for AI earnings, capital expenditure and productivity could affect markets beyond technology shares. Debt, leverage, opaque financing and circular arrangements could amplify losses if those expectations fall short.

The scale figures below are estimates cited by the Bank, not forecasts or calculations it independently produced. In particular, the $4.1 trillion figure is a projection of financing over several years, not debt already issued.

Measure Figure What it represents
Global AI-related debt issuance Around $450 billion as of early September 2026 Morgan Stanley estimate reported by the Bank of England; more than twice total issuance in all of 2025, according to the Bank’s record.
AI-related capital expenditure financed through debt Around $4.1 trillion between 2026 and 2030 JPMorgan analysts’ forward-looking estimate reported by the Bank of England; it is projected financing, not realized issuance.
AI hyperscalers’ share of UK corporate bond issuance 47% so far in 2026 Share attributed to AI hyperscalers by the Bank of England. Sterling issuance remained significantly smaller than issuance in the US and euro area.

These measures describe different things: issuance already observed, projected debt-financed spending, and a share of sterling corporate bond issuance. They should not be added together or read as interchangeable measures of current debt exposure.

How the bond selloff could matter to companies

Government bond yields help set a reference point for borrowing across the economy. If investors demand higher yields on government debt, companies may face a more expensive baseline for financing; if they also demand more compensation for corporate risk, credit spreads can widen as well. That is the channel linking sovereign borrowing costs to the corporate debt costs Dimon discussed.

The Bank of England said in its September 2026 assessment that UK gilt yields and US Treasury yields had reached levels not seen since 2008. That is the Bank’s assessment at that time, not a live yield quotation or a statement of current market levels.

What is established about UK banks

Bloomberg’s episode listing confirms that UK banks were among the interview topics, but its accessible description does not say what Dimon specifically said about them. Without a transcript or recording, attributing a view about UK banks’ competitiveness, strategy or policy to him would go beyond the available account.

Separate from the interview, the Bank of England’s September 2026 Financial Policy Committee record said the UK banking system remained appropriately capitalised and highly liquid. The Committee maintained the countercyclical capital buffer at 2%. It also said past stress tests showed banks could withstand a severe energy-price shock and downturn while continuing to lend. These are the regulator’s resilience indicators, not a direct response to Dimon’s remarks.

How to read the warning

  • It is conditional. Dimon described what could happen if demand for capital continues to rise; the reported comment does not give a timeline or declare a crisis inevitable.
  • AI expectations can affect more than technology stocks. The Bank of England’s concerns include debt-funded investment and the possibility that leverage or complex financing could magnify losses if expected returns disappoint.
  • Market pressures and bank resilience are distinct questions. Higher sovereign yields and corporate borrowing costs can create risks even when the Bank of England judges banks to be well capitalised and liquid.
