Jake Oettinger stopped 20 of 22 shots in Dallas’s 4–0 season-opening loss to St. Louis on Oct. 2, 2026. The final score includes two late empty-net goals, so Oettinger did not allow four goals while in net. Dallas was shut out by Joel Hofer, who made 25 saves.
How Oettinger’s 20-save game became a 4–0 loss
The Blues scored twice with Oettinger in goal, then added two empty-netters after Dallas pulled him late in the third period. Jimmy Snuggerud scored at 17:37 and Pius Suter followed at 17:52, just 15 seconds later, according to the NHL recap. RotoWire also reported Oettinger’s line as 20 saves on 22 shots.
That distinction matters: the 4–0 result is the team score, while Oettinger’s save line reflects shots he faced before Dallas went to an extra attacker. St. Louis goalie Joel Hofer stopped all 25 shots he faced to earn the shutout.
How St. Louis scored its first two goals
McTavish opened the scoring early
Mason McTavish put St. Louis ahead 1:34 into the first period. Colton Parayko’s shot was stopped, but the rebound stayed available and McTavish finished the play, the NHL recap reported.

Dvorsky capitalized on a second-period breakdown
Dalibor Dvorsky made it 2–0 at 13:05 of the second. The NHL’s account says Oettinger left the puck for Nils Lundkvist, but Pius Suter beat Lundkvist to it and found Philip Broberg in front. As Oettinger recovered, he tripped over Roope Hintz, leaving Dvorsky an open net.
Dallas’s official postgame account also characterized the sequence as an unlucky collision and a costly mid-game mistake. That play was a defensive breakdown involving several players, not a fourth goal against Oettinger; the final two goals came into an empty net.
Why Dallas could not get back into the game
The Stars were unable to solve Hofer, and their power play did not provide a response. Dallas’s official postgame account described the start as clunky and the power play as unproductive. A third-period power-play goal by Adam Jiricek initially appeared to give St. Louis another score, but Dallas successfully challenged it for offside and the goal was overturned.

Forward Tyler Seguin described the game’s rhythm in the Stars’ official postgame account: “In a way, it almost felt like preseason.” He added, “The game flow fell and penalties ruined the flow.” That was Seguin’s impression of the stop-start game, not a statistical assessment.

RotoWire reported that Oettinger missed the preseason because of a lower-body injury and had been cleared to play as of Wednesday before the Oct. 2 opener. He played against St. Louis. RotoWire projected that he should receive a starter’s workload in 2026–27, but that is an outlook rather than a confirmed schedule or guarantee; the report also identified Casey DeSmith as a capable backup.
