Jabil’s automotive roots reach back to its early circuit-board work and a major General Motors contract. Today, the company describes capabilities across advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), connectivity, electrification and vehicle computing. That history and current portfolio help explain its automotive focus—but Jabil’s 2023 sale of two mobility sites to BYD Electronic was a portfolio change, not evidence that it left all automotive work.

Jabil’s automotive connection began with circuit boards

Jabil says James Golden and William Morean formed a 50-50 partnership in 1966, building circuit boards in the Morean home outside Detroit for Control Data Corporation. The company’s history then records a pivotal automotive contract: General Motors awarded Jabil a $15 million high-volume printed circuit board manufacturing contract in 1979. Jabil says that work helped expand its automated assembly capabilities. The $15 million figure is the historical value of that contract, not a measure of Jabil’s current automotive revenue. From automotive electronics to electric vehicles

Jabil dates its entry into the electric-vehicle market to 2012. The company says its work has included EV powertrains and charging components, along with related offerings for major brands. That marks a shift in the technologies it highlights, from circuit-board manufacturing toward components and systems used in electrified vehicles. Jabil’s company history

What Jabil says it does for automotive customers today

Jabil’s current automotive materials describe product-development and manufacturing capabilities across several areas. These are company descriptions of its capabilities, not a public breakdown of automotive revenue or a list of named customer programs.

  • ADAS: Technologies associated with advanced driver-assistance systems.
  • Connectivity: Electronics that support connected vehicle functions.
  • Power and charging: Technologies related to vehicle power systems and charging.
  • Vehicle computing: Computing technologies for vehicles.

What the 2023 mobility divestiture means

In 2023, Jabil says it divested its mobility business to BYD Electronic, transferring its Chengdu and Wuxi sites. The transaction is an important part of the company’s automotive story, but it should not be read as proof that Jabil exited all automotive work: Jabil continues to describe automotive capabilities, and its latest outlook names automotive as a growth area. The available statements do not quantify how the divestiture changed Jabil’s automotive revenue or define the scope of every activity that remained. Jabil’s company history

This is management’s broad outlook language, not a separately quantified automotive forecast. The release statement establishes that Jabil expects automotive to contribute to growth; it does not state an automotive-specific growth rate or revenue figure.

How to interpret Jabil’s “return” to automotive

The “trip back” framing makes sense as a description of renewed emphasis on a longstanding business connection, rather than a claim that Jabil is restarting automotive work after a complete departure. Its history runs from early circuit-board manufacturing and the 1979 GM contract through EV-market entry in 2012. The current company materials identify automotive technologies it serves, while the 2023 site transfer and FY2027 outlook show that portfolio ownership and growth expectations are distinct parts of the story.
