Ja Morant could open the Portland Trail Blazers’ 2026–27 season in a reserve role, according to a report published October 2, 2026. That is a possibility—not a confirmed opening-night lineup decision. If Portland uses Morant with the second unit, the report identifies Jrue Holiday as the likeliest starter in his place.
What the report says about Morant’s role
CBS Sports’ RotoWire Staff item, attributing the report to Casey Holdahl of the Trail Blazers’ official site, says Morant could begin the season coming off the bench. It does not report that Portland has made a final decision or announced its opening lineup.
The item notes that Morant had made only two bench appearances in his seven-year NBA career, making a reserve role an unusual change for him, according to CBS Sports/RotoWire.

In the scenario where Portland deploys Morant with the second unit, Jrue Holiday appears to be the most likely candidate to start, according to the report. That identification is conditional; it is not confirmation that Holiday will start.

Portland’s roster page also lists guards Damian Lillard and Scoot Henderson alongside Morant and Holiday. Their presence adds context to the team’s guard-role questions, but the roster listing does not establish a starting combination or rotation.
What remains unconfirmed
The October 2 report does not give a coach’s explanation for a possible change, confirm the season-opening lineup, or say how Portland would balance its guards. Spacing, ball-handling responsibilities, opponent matchups, and how the team integrates Morant are possible factors to consider, but they are analytical possibilities—not stated reasons for the reported scenario.
NBA.com’s player page lists Morant as a Portland guard and displays his 2025–26 averages as 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game. Those are past-season figures shown on the player page, not projections for 2026–27.
