After a month with an AI agent, my verdict is deliberately split: it can remove a surprising amount of routine work, but its ability to act across tools makes mistakes harder to see and costlier to undo. I now delegate bounded, reversible tasks. I do not give it unreviewed authority over money, publication, security, or decisions that affect another person.
That is not a contradiction. “Impressed” describes the capability curve; “terrified” describes the control and accountability gap.
What an AI agent does differently from a chatbot
The UK government’s consumer report describes agentic AI as systems that can “sense, decide and act.” Depending on the setup, an agent can break a goal into subtasks, plan a sequence, retrieve current information, use connected services, remember earlier interactions, and take actions such as submitting a form or making a payment.
A chat-only tool may give me a bad answer. An agent can give me a bad answer, choose the wrong next step, and carry that mistake through several systems before I notice. The important distinction is not that an agent is always autonomous; it is that the workflow can continue across steps and services.

Week one: the novelty was genuinely useful
Where it saved me time
I started with work that was easy to inspect and easy to reverse: collecting information, turning notes into a draft, summarizing long material, and suggesting code changes. The agent was most useful when I supplied a clear goal, a small working area, and an obvious way to check the result.
That experience matches measured evidence rather than proving that every task gets faster. A Stanford University and National Bureau of Economic Research study in 2024 found that generative-AI assistance increased customer-support issues resolved per hour by 15% on average. The gains were larger for less experienced and lower-skilled workers; the most experienced and highest-skilled workers saw small speed gains alongside small quality declines.
The practical lesson from my first week was simple: productivity depends on the task, the user’s expertise, and the time required to check the output. An agent can accelerate a draft without making the final judgment for me.

Week two: delegation became easier than I expected
Plans that persist across steps
Once the agent had completed several harmless tasks, I began giving it a longer sequence instead of a single prompt. It could maintain a plan, call the tools I had enabled, and return with intermediate results. That continuity was the feature that changed my behavior. I was no longer asking, “Can it answer this?” I was asking, “Which part of this process can I hand over?”
Anthropic’s 2026 analysis of Claude Code sessions shows the same direction of travel: the longest sessions grew from under 25 minutes to more than 45 minutes. Full auto-approval appeared in roughly 20% of sessions for new users and more than 40% for experienced users. Familiarity appears to increase the amount of authority people grant, even though familiarity does not guarantee better judgment.
Software engineering accounted for nearly half of observed public-API agent activity in that analysis. Most observed actions were low-risk and reversible, while use in healthcare, finance, and cybersecurity was emerging. That distribution matters: the safest early use cases are usually the ones where a mistaken action can be inspected, rolled back, and repeated safely.

Week three: the break was a recovery problem
When the agent was wrong
The unsettling moment was not a spectacular failure. It was watching the agent continue confidently after an assumption had become false. The output looked organized, the steps appeared plausible, and the explanation did not make the hidden uncertainty visible. I had to stop the process, identify the first bad assumption, and reconstruct what had happened.
That pattern is consistent with BIS testing: agents performed impressively on narrow tasks but were weak at recognizing when they were wrong, experimenting effectively to fix an error, and recovering from mistakes. Humans make errors too; the difference is that people often notice a contradiction, change strategy, or ask for help sooner in the tested settings.
Why checking can get worse
Google researchers observed 76 software engineers and found increasing reliance on the AI during a task, with evidence of automation complacency. Microsoft Research describes the broader burden as a shift from producing work to evaluating AI output. Automation can make easy tasks easier while making difficult tasks harder because the human must supervise a fast, opaque process without receiving a clean account of every assumption.

My response was to treat an agent’s explanation as evidence to inspect, not as an audit trail. I now look for the inputs it used, the actions it took, the points where it asked for approval, and the exact state it left behind.
Week four: the rules that made continued use possible
My delegation boundary

A review routine that scales
- Define the goal, allowed tools, data scope, and stopping condition before starting.
- Prefer read-only access, sandboxes, drafts, previews, and version history.
- Require approval at the boundary where an action becomes external, irreversible, expensive, or reputationally significant.
- Check primary inputs and outputs rather than only reading the agent’s summary.
- Keep an audit trail: prompts, retrieved sources, tool calls, approvals, and final results.
- If the agent behaves unexpectedly, revoke access, preserve the logs, undo reversible changes, and restart from a known-good state instead of asking it to conceal or rewrite the failure.
These controls add friction, but they also make the useful part of autonomy available without pretending that the system can supervise itself.

Emotional attachment
OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab state that ChatGPT is not designed to replace or mimic human relationships. Their findings nevertheless describe people using AI in relational ways; stronger attachment and viewing the AI as a friend correlated with more negative effects. The authors explicitly describe these as correlations, not proof that the system caused those outcomes. For me, the boundary is practical: an agent can help me think, but it is not a friend, therapist, manager, or accountable colleague.

Professional reputation
A PNAS study of more than 4,400 participants found that people who use AI can be judged as less competent and less motivated. That creates a social penalty even when performance improves. I therefore disclose AI assistance when policy or context requires it, retain responsibility for the result, and avoid presenting an unreviewed agent output as my own considered judgment.
Will agents replace my job?
The evidence supports task transformation more strongly than a universal replacement claim. Agents can absorb portions of research, drafting, coding, support, and routine workflow work. Humans still carry context, accountability, exception handling, relationship management, and responsibility for consequences. The near-term advantage belongs to people who can specify work clearly, evaluate outputs rigorously, and design safe boundaries around automation.
Why the fear is rational as adoption accelerates
The World Economic Forum reported in 2025 that 82% of executives planned to adopt agents within one to three years, while identifying gaps in autonomy controls, safety, system integration, and trust governance. Adoption can therefore outrun the procedures needed to supervise it. A responsible deployment needs more than a capable model: it needs permissions, interruption controls, privacy rules, auditability, recovery plans, and a named human owner.
After a month, I still use an agent because the time savings are real. I am terrified when the system’s authority is broad, its actions are difficult to reverse, or nobody can explain what happened after an error. The workable position is neither blanket rejection nor blind trust: delegate bounded work, keep consequential decisions human, and make every important action reviewable.
