The right iTunes alternative depends on the job: Apple’s Windows apps cover Apple media, MusicBee and MediaMonkey focus on local music libraries, foobar2000 suits listeners who want deep customization, and CopyTrans Manager focuses on transfers to Apple devices. No single option replaces every iTunes function, so separate streaming, local-file management, device syncing, backups, video, podcasts, audiobooks, and playlist migration before choosing.
Which part of iTunes are you trying to replace?
“iTunes alternative” can mean several different things. An app that plays music is not necessarily able to manage a local collection, sync an iPhone, make a backup, or handle podcasts and audiobooks. Decide which job matters before comparing tools.
- Apple media on Windows: Apple Music and Apple TV handle music and video in Apple’s current Windows workflow.
- Local music files: A library manager organizes and plays files stored on your computer, often with playlist and tagging tools.
- Apple-device transfers or management: A transfer utility may move music to a device, but that does not make it a full media library, streaming service, or backup tool.
- Moving playlists between streaming services: Migration tools can transfer playlists between supported services; compatibility depends on the specific source and destination.
Apple’s Windows guidance explains that installing Apple Music or Apple TV moves music or video playback into those apps. iTunes can still be used for audiobooks and podcasts. If you do not install the separate apps, Apple says you can continue using iTunes for all media.

Choose the option that matches your use
If you want Apple’s media apps on Windows
Install Apple Music for music and Apple TV for TV shows and movies. Apple’s Windows setup separates those media tasks rather than combining them in iTunes. Apple Devices is part of the closest official Windows workflow described by the 2026 comparison, but it is a separate app rather than a replacement for every iTunes feature. Check Apple’s current instructions for the device task you need.
If you mainly manage music files on your PC
Start with MusicBee if you want a free Windows library manager and value organization, playlists, tagging, and playback. Its directory listing also describes CD ripping and device syncing, but that does not confirm compatibility with a particular device or setup. For a very large or complex collection, the 2026 comparison points to MediaMonkey. For extensive playback customization, it points to foobar2000, with the trade-off that setup can involve manual configuration.

If your immediate goal is moving music to an Apple device
CopyTrans Manager is the focused transfer choice in the 2026 comparison. Treat it as a transfer utility, not a substitute for streaming, a comprehensive media library, or device backups. Verify current device and Windows support with the vendor before relying on it.
If you are moving playlists between streaming services
Migration is a separate task from replacing iTunes. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that Tidal and Deezer directed users toward TuneMyMusic, Amazon Music listed TuneMyMusic, SongShift, and Soundiiz, and Google advised third-party services for some YouTube Music transfers. A named service’s availability does not guarantee that your particular source-to-destination transfer is supported. Check these features before switching
Use this checklist against the tasks you actually perform in iTunes. A tool that meets one requirement may not meet the others.
- Platform: Confirm that the app supports your Windows version or other operating system; current requirements are not established for every option here.
- Streaming or local files: Decide whether you need access to a streaming catalog, playback and organization of files you own, or both.
- Library and metadata: Check for the tagging, playlist, organization, and import controls you rely on.

What “best iTunes alternative” means in practice
For a Windows user who wants Apple’s own media workflow, the 2026 comparison’s closest official approach is Apple Music plus Apple Devices, with Apple TV for video; iTunes may still be needed for audiobooks and podcasts. For a free local music library, consider MusicBee. For a large collection, consider MediaMonkey; for configurable playback, foobar2000; and for a focused Apple-device music transfer, CopyTrans Manager. If your real goal is playlist migration, compare supported service pairs in a migration tool instead of choosing a library manager.
