A traffic drop after a site migration is not proof that Google has judged the new site “low quality.” The cause may be a redirect, crawl block, canonical conflict, stale sitemap, server failure, or a genuine decline in page usefulness. Diagnose the mechanical and content tracks together: first prove that Google can reach and understand the correct new URLs, then compare whether those pages still satisfy the same search intent as the old ones.
What a migration-related traffic drop actually means
A move changes many signals at once. URLs, templates, internal links, metadata, canonicals, hosting, rendering and content can all change in one release. Google’s site-move guidance says to expect temporary ranking fluctuation while it discovers and processes the new URLs. It also warns that Google will crawl a new site more heavily than usual after a migration.
That temporary volatility is different from a quality diagnosis. Google’s troubleshooting guidance lists leftover noindex directives, robots.txt blocks, incorrect redirects, crawl errors, inadequate server capacity and stale sitemaps alongside content and canonical problems. A technically clean migration can still lose visibility if useful sections were removed, pages became duplicates or the new copy no longer matches the query that brought visitors before.
There is no universal recovery percentage or guaranteed number of days. Small and medium sites may move most URLs within weeks, while larger or slower sites take longer; discovery speed, URL volume and server performance determine the schedule.

Run an eight-step diagnostic before rewriting the site

Freeze a before-and-after baseline
Export the leading landing pages, indexed URL count, organic clicks, rankings, backlinks, templates, metadata and content versions from before the release. Keep the same date ranges and query definitions so later changes can be attributed to the migration rather than seasonality.

Test a representative old-URL sample
Open important old URLs from analytics, backlinks and search results. Each should return a permanent redirect directly to the closest matching new URL. Look for chains, loops, redirects to the home page, irrelevant destinations and redirects that end at a missing page. A page-to-page map preserves relevance; sending every request to one generic destination does not.

Remove migration-only access blocks
Check the rendered HTML for accidental
noindextags and inspect HTTP responses for anX-Robots-Tag. Reviewrobots.txtdisallows, staging authentication, firewall rules and deployment settings that still identify the site as private. Make every preferred URL agree
For each important page, compare five signals: the redirect destination, internal links, sitemap entry, canonical tag and the page’s visible identity. They should all point to the same preferred URL. A new URL should normally use a self-referencing canonical. If Google sees conflicting signals, it can select a different canonical; its guidance specifically notes that content quality and technical signals can override the canonical a site declares.

Validate status codes and the sitemap
Crawl the new site and confirm that intended pages return successful responses, assets load, and the submitted sitemap contains the new canonical URLs rather than retired addresses. Content that was deliberately removed or merged without a replacement should return a real
404or410. Do not publish a thin “success” page merely to avoid an error status. -
Use Search Console to locate the break
In Search Console, review Page Indexing, URL Inspection, crawl statistics and sitemap processing. Compare the timing of any spike in Not found, blocked, duplicate or server-error reports with the deployment. Inspect individual URLs to see which canonical Google selected, whether crawling is allowed and when the page was last fetched.

Check capacity and rendering under heavier crawling
Monitor origin errors, latency, timeouts, CDN behavior, JavaScript rendering and mobile output. A migration can trigger a crawl surge that exposes limits the old site rarely reached. A page that works in a browser but fails for Googlebot because scripts time out or the origin returns intermittent errors is not a content-quality problem first.

Update every discoverability source
Repair internal links, campaign URLs, social profiles and high-value external links where you control them. Submit the current sitemap and keep the old redirects active while processing settles. Google recommends keeping redirects for as long as possible, generally at least one year, so users can still reach old addresses and signals have time to transfer.

How to tell a content-quality loss from a technical failure
Once crawling, redirects and indexing are stable, compare old and new versions page by page. The new page should preserve the original intent, answer the important subquestions and retain assets that carried meaning, such as images, specifications, downloads, navigation and structured data. Warning signs include:
- Sections that explained the topic were removed or replaced by generic boilerplate.
- Several old pages were merged into one page that cannot satisfy all of their distinct intents.
- Near-duplicate URL variants were created by filters, parameters or changed templates.
- Placeholder text, broken images, missing tables or invalid structured data make the page incomplete.
- The title and visible content promise one subject while the canonical or destination URL represents another.
- A page now resembles an error page but still returns a successful HTTP response. Google calls this a soft 404.
Quality is therefore an observable comparison, not a label to apply when rankings fall. If an old guide answered a question in detail and the replacement contains only a short summary, restore the missing substance before requesting reindexing. If the page has no legitimate replacement, return 404 or 410 instead of creating a low-value destination.
Choose the repair according to the failure pattern

Hosting-only moves need a separate check
If the visible URLs did not change and only the host or infrastructure moved, test the new environment before changing DNS. After the switch, monitor both hosts, verify that the new host reliably serves users and Googlebot, and shut down the old host only after the new infrastructure is stable. This isolates DNS, capacity, TLS, CDN and rendering failures from URL-migration issues.

A rollback is most defensible when a release introduced a broad, reversible mechanical fault—such as a site-wide noindex, broken redirect rule, inaccessible origin or template error—and the previous version can be restored safely. Do not roll back solely because rankings fluctuate during normal processing. For persistent losses after technical signals agree, commission a technical SEO migration audit or use a redirect-testing crawler to examine the full URL set, server logs and crawl behavior. A larger content or architecture rebuild is warranted only when the page-by-page comparison shows that the new site genuinely fails to meet the old search intents.
What recovery timing to expect
Keep redirects, monitoring and the new sitemap in place while Google recrawls and reprocesses the site. Processing time varies with URL count, crawl discovery, server speed and site complexity, so a fixed deadline would be misleading. Track indexed coverage, selected canonicals, crawl errors, organic clicks and representative rankings against the frozen baseline; those trends show whether the migration is settling or whether another defect remains.
