Bungie’s planned Destiny 2 live-service content updates ended with Monument of Triumph, released June 9, 2026. The studio called it the game’s “final live-service content update” and described a shift toward incubating future games. That is a major transition for Bungie, but it is not an announcement that Destiny 2 is shutting down: Bungie said it would ensure the game remained playable.
What Bungie announced
On May 21, 2026, Bungie published “Destiny 2: Every End is a New Beginning”. The announcement said the June 9 release would be Destiny 2’s final live-service content update, marking the end of active content development as Bungie described it.

The update was titled Monument of Triumph. Bungie’s June 9, 2026 Update 9.7.0 notes document the release and its in-game changes. The date and title make this more specific than a general statement that the game was entering a quieter period: Bungie identified a final update and then released it.
Is Destiny 2 shutting down?
No shutdown was announced. Bungie said: “Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today.” That is Bungie’s statement about its intention to keep the game playable; it does not specify a guaranteed service period.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
- Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Content Description: Animated blood, violence
“Final live-service content update” means the planned stream of new live-service content updates was ending. It should not be treated as synonymous with taking the game offline. The announcement distinguishes the end of active content development from continued playability.
What the announcement means for Bungie
Bungie presented the change as part of a wider studio transition. In May, it said: “As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games.” This establishes the studio’s stated direction, not the identity, scope, or release timing of a particular unannounced project.

- Available 9.3.18. Playable 9.4.18 at 10AM PDT
- Destiny 2
- Expansion I: Curse of Osiris
- Expansion II: Warmind
- Destiny 2: Forsaken
The practical distinction is that Bungie described both an endpoint for Destiny 2’s planned live-service updates and a shift in its development focus. The announcement did not say that Bungie was ending the Destiny franchise.

What Bungie has said about Destiny and Marathon since
On September 17, 2026, Bungie published “The Next Chapter for Bungie”, a further statement about the future of Destiny and Marathon. Bungie also described an aim to earn back player trust. These are statements of direction and intent, not confirmation that a specific future Destiny game has a release date.

- Evil has destroyed almost all of our solar system leaving us on the brink of extinction. You are a Guardian, revived from the past to save our future and protect the last safe city on Earth. Wield incredible powers as a Hunter, Warlock, or Titan and push back the darkness to reclaim our solar system.
- In Destiny: The Taken King, the Darkness has a name: Oryx, The Taken King. He is hell-bent on vengeance and is raising an army of corrupted Taken forces to destroy everything you stand for. You must find a way into his impenetrable Dreadnaught ship and stop him before he and his dark army bring our solar system to ruin.
- Destiny: The Taken King is the next great adventure in the first person shooter Destiny universe. It introduces a new story campaign and quests, new enemies to fight, new locations to explore, new Strikes and Crucible maps, a new Raid that will put players to the ultimate test, and more. To stand up to the challenge, players will have access to three new devastating Guardian subclasses, and a massive arsenal of weapons, armor, and gear.
- Contents include: Destiny Base Game, Expansion I, Expansion II, and The Taken King
The September statement is useful follow-up because it shows Bungie continued to discuss Destiny after the final Destiny 2 update. It does not undo the May announcement about Destiny 2’s live-service content, nor does it establish exactly what form the franchise’s next chapter will take.
