The vessel described as a new “1,800-ton stealth submarine” is Italy’s U212NFS, a diesel-electric submarine for the Italian Navy. The second boat is already under construction: its keel was laid at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard on 1 October 2026. It is scheduled for delivery in 2030.
What is the U212NFS?
The U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) is a next-generation Italian Navy submarine and an evolution of the earlier U212A class. Fincantieri describes the design as having greater maturity, more Italian-developed technology and more extensive integration of onboard systems. The programme covers four submarines and related logistical support; it is managed and entrusted to OCCAR, the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation. Fincantieri’s 1 October 2026 announcement identifies the Italian Navy as the intended operator.
Has construction started, and when will it be delivered?
Yes. Fincantieri held the second submarine’s keel-laying ceremony at its Muggiano shipyard on 1 October 2026. That makes “soon to be built” outdated for this boat: keel-laying marks a construction milestone, not a future start. The company schedules the second unit’s delivery for 2030; that is a planned date, not confirmation that delivery has occurred.

Fincantieri also says more than one hundred submarines have been built at Muggiano. That is the shipbuilder’s statement about the yard’s history, not a U212NFS programme total.

What is new about its propulsion and onboard systems?
Fincantieri names two specific innovations for the U212NFS: a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new combat management system. It also points to enhanced integration of onboard systems as part of the class’s evolution from U212A.
The manufacturer says these changes are intended to improve stealth, endurance, efficiency and cyber resilience. The announcement does not provide independently tested measurements for those benefits, so they should be read as design aims and company claims rather than verified operational results.

Is it really an 1,800-ton submarine?
The 1,800-ton figure is not confirmed by the Fincantieri announcement. A 2 October 2026 report by Interesting Engineering gives the U212NFS a submerged displacement of 1,750 tons. That is a secondary-source figure; the official release reviewed does not state displacement. The available information does not explain the difference between the rounded 1,800-ton headline and the reported 1,750-ton figure.
