Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (the Farnesina) said its website had been the target of a cyberattack from the morning of 8 October 2026. The ministry said its security systems had effectively mitigated the attack without disrupting services. It also said checks were underway on the websites of Italian diplomatic and consular missions abroad to look for similar attempts. Based on the reports available as of 8 October 2026, there is no established breach of any embassy or consulate website, and no published outcome of those checks.
What the ministry has confirmed
The official statement is the most reliable source for what the Farnesina itself has said. It confirms four things, and nothing beyond them:
- The ministry’s website was targeted by a cyberattack beginning the morning of 8 October 2026.
- The attack was, in the ministry’s words, “effectively mitigated by the security systems without causing any disruption to services.”
- The ministry was monitoring the situation together with the National Strategic Centre and other relevant authorities.
- Analyses were underway on Italian diplomatic and consular mission websites to check for similar attempts. The statement describes a review. It does not say any of those sites were attacked or compromised.

The statement’s wording on service continuity is limited to services. It does not say whether any data was accessed, and it should not be read as a statement that all ministry systems were unaffected.

Are Italian embassy websites hacked?
No report reviewed establishes that. The ministry’s language is about checking embassy and consular sites for “similar attempts.” An attempt is not the same as a successful intrusion, and the available coverage does not say what the checks found. Until the ministry or a credible follow-up report says otherwise, the accurate description is that Italy’s diplomatic and consular websites are under review after the attack on the central ministry site.
Who is behind the attack?
The pro-Russian group NoName057(16) is the only named actor in the coverage. ANSA’s English service reported that the group claimed responsibility and that the ministry site was flooded with fake access requests. ANSA also reported that the Postal Police, the National Cybercrime Center for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure, and the National Cybersecurity Agency had been mobilized. See the ANSA English Service report of 8 October 2026.

A group’s claim of responsibility is not an official attribution. Reuters, in a report republished by Internazionale, said the ministry had named no suspect. The Farnesina’s own statement does not identify a perpetrator. The table below separates what is official from what is reported.

The Euronews report is the source for the DDoS description. Its 8 October 2026 article on the pro-Russian group’s targeting of the ministry presents the method as apparent from early reports. The ministry’s statement confirms a cyberattack but does not describe its technical method. Treat DDoS as the working characterization, not a forensic finding.
How the ministry is responding
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in the official release: “Cybersecurity is a key element of the reform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved last year. In recent months, we have strengthened our capabilities in preventing, monitoring and responding to threats, implementing all the necessary countermeasures, including technological ones.”

The ministry also said Italy planned to work with Romania and other member states on proposals at forthcoming European meetings to designate those responsible for cyberattacks, including attacks on Italian institutions. This is a stated policy plan. It is not a completed designation, and no date for those meetings is given in the coverage reviewed.

What is not yet known
The coverage reviewed does not provide attack volume, duration, the number of affected sites, or any financial impact. No outcome of the embassy and consulate checks has been published. Readers should not assume any of these figures are settled, and should be cautious about numbers circulating on social media that do not trace back to the ministry or to a named news report.
How to follow the story
- Check the ministry’s press releases on esteri.it for any update on the embassy and consulate review.
- Look for whether a follow-up report names a suspect, which would be a development separate from the group’s claim.
- Note whether a later report confirms the DDoS characterization, or describes a different technical method.
- Be wary of any statement that an individual embassy site was breached unless the ministry or a named outlet confirms it.
This article reflects the reports available as of 8 October 2026. Because the review is ongoing, later official updates may change the picture.
