A 36-year-old man was arrested in Gurugram on Thursday, October 1, after a 50-year-old Italian entrepreneur alleged that he took €900 from her after promising marriage, Hindustan Times reported. The arrest is an investigative development, not a finding of guilt; the available reports do not establish a conviction.
What police allege happened
Police identified the suspect as Akhil Maurya and alleged that he received a total of €900—about ₹98,000 in Hindustan Times’ approximate conversion—from the woman. According to ACP Gaurav Fogat, as quoted by Hindustan Times, the money was sent in two €450 Western Union transfers, dated August 4 and September 10. Times of India also reported two transfers but did not give the second date in its account.
Police said the alleged relationship involved a promise of marriage and requests for money. Hindustan Times reported that the complainant said she wanted to report the alleged conduct to help prevent others from being targeted. These are allegations and reported statements, not conclusions established by a court.
Why the complainant travelled to Gurugram
Hindustan Times reported that the woman travelled to India and spent almost twice the alleged loss on flights, visa fees and hotels before filing a complaint. The report describes her as a 50-year-old Italian entrepreneur. Published coverage conflicts over her first name: Hindustan Times identified her as Daniela De Pietri, while an earlier PTI-syndicated NDTV report named Paola Bertolini. The available reporting does not resolve that discrepancy.
