Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to register a sound trademark built around a four-second recording of her saying “Io sono Giorgia Meloni.” The application was reported as still under examination on October 5, 2026; it is not a confirmed registration, and even approval would not automatically stop people or AI systems from imitating her voice.
What Meloni’s voice trademark application contains
Associated Press reported that the application submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) includes a four-second audio clip of Meloni saying “Io sono Giorgia Meloni” (“I am Giorgia Meloni”). Rai Televideo also described a four-second recording and reported that the application was awaiting a response.
The phrase draws on Meloni’s “Io sono Giorgia” declaration at a 2019 political rally, according to AP’s report. It was also the title of her 2021 autobiography, Io sono Giorgia: le mie radici, le mie idee. The book provides cultural context for the phrase; it is not a tool for protecting a voice from deepfakes.

A sound trademark application seeks protection for a particular sound as a mark in the relevant commercial context. If registered, it could give Meloni an additional legal option to challenge certain unauthorized uses. AP and an intellectual-property agency commentary caution that this would not amount to comprehensive ownership of her voice or automatically prevent AI-generated imitations.

The filing should therefore be understood as one possible layer of protection, not a technical block on voice cloning. The reporting does not establish how a particular future use would be assessed, what remedy might apply, or whether any specific imitation would infringe rights. Application status and what remains unknown
In coverage dated October 5, 2026, the application was described as under examination rather than registered. That is a time-specific status and may have changed. The exact EUIPO application number and official goods-and-services wording are not established in the cited reporting, so no application classes or broader filing scope can be stated here. How this differs from Meloni’s deepfake-image case
AP reported that Meloni began a separate legal case in 2024 against a man accused of creating and posting pornographic deepfake images using her likeness. AP described that case as pending as of October 5, 2026. It concerns alleged image misuse and is distinct from the sound trademark application; the reporting does not show that the filing resolves or determines the court case.
Why the filing matters beyond one politician
Meloni has warned that deepfakes can “deceive, manipulate and harm anyone,” AP reported. After fake images surfaced, AP also reported her statement: “I can defend myself, but many others cannot.” The filing highlights a broader challenge: legal rights may offer ways to respond to some unauthorized uses, but a trademark alone cannot stop voice-cloning technology or guarantee that a person can prevent every imitation.
