A new live-action Ghostbusters movie may be in development, but the Christmas-movie angle is not confirmed. Gizmodo and Dread Central report that insider Daniel Richtman shared the project information, including the possible title Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34 Street and Josh Miller as its reported screenwriter. The title suggests a holiday story; no plot or Christmas setting has been confirmed.
What’s been reported about the new Ghostbusters movie?
Gizmodo’s October 6, 2026 report attributes the information to Richtman via Ghostbusters News. Dread Central’s October 5 report attributes it to Richtman’s Patreon. Both describe a Sony live-action film, with Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34 Street as its reported title.

Josh Miller is also reported as the screenwriter. Dread Central says the identification is unconfirmed, so Miller’s involvement should be treated as a report, not an official announcement. Neither outlet establishes that Sony has publicly confirmed the film.

Is it a Christmas movie?
That is an inference from the reported title, not a confirmed premise. Dread Central writer Brad Miska puts the uncertainty plainly: “We don’t have a plot yet, and neither a Christmas setting nor a connection to the cartoon has been confirmed.”

So far, the reporting does not establish the story, whether it takes place at Christmas, or whether it connects to The Real Ghostbusters. It also does not establish a cast, director, or release date.
How does the rumor differ from Ghostbusters: Night Shift?
Ghostbusters: Night Shift is a separate, announced animated series for Netflix. Dread Central reports that it is planned for 2027, set in New York City in 1994, and follows a young, untrained group facing a new supernatural threat. Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Dan Aykroyd are among its executive producers. Those known details about the series do not confirm the rumored live-action movie.
| Project | Format and status | What’s known |
|---|---|---|
| Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34 Street | Reported live-action film; rumor | Title and Josh Miller as reported screenwriter; no confirmed premise, cast, director, or release date in the cited reports. |
| Ghostbusters: Night Shift | Announced animated Netflix series | Planned for 2027; set in New York City in 1994 and centered on a young, untrained group facing a new supernatural threat. |
What can fans watch while waiting?
If you want a franchise rewatch, Sony lists Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats on its official page. It is an existing film, not a tie-in to the rumored project.
