A 51-year-old Palestinian man, identified by Palestinian officials as Mashhour Shaher Yassin, was killed during an attack in Yasuf in the Salfit area of the occupied West Bank on October 1, 2026. Reports differ over who fired at the other Palestinians injured and how the confrontation unfolded; those accounts have not been reconciled.

What happened in Yasuf

The incident was reported on Thursday, October 1, in the village of Yasuf, in the Salfit area of the West Bank. WAFA, the official Palestinian news agency, located the attack in Al-Nasba, east of the village. Reuters described an attack on a home on Yasuf’s outskirts.

Reuters reported that Palestinian officials said settlers shot two Palestinians during the attack, killing one and injuring another. The man who died was identified by Reuters as Mashour Yassin, 51. WAFA gave his fuller name as Mashhour Shaher Yassin and reported that Salfit Governmental Hospital director Mohammad Al-Ramahi confirmed his death from injuries sustained in the attack.

What officials say about who fired

The reports give different accounts of the shooting. Reuters said Palestinian officials alleged settlers shot two Palestinians before Israeli military personnel arrived. It also reported the Israeli military’s account that Palestinians threw stones at Israelis approaching the village, military personnel dispersed those involved, and soldiers fired shots toward Palestinians. The military did not immediately comment on the timing of its fire relative to the alleged settler shooting.

WAFA Israeli forces’ live ammunition injured two Palestinians: one had an abdominal gunshot wound, and another had a flank injury from a live-ammunition fragment.

WAFA’s report of two injured Palestinians differs from Reuters’ report of one injured in the Palestinian officials’ account. The available reports do not establish a complete, independently verified sequence or resolve which account describes the shots that caused each injury.

What the village council head said

Yasuf village council head Jumaa Abdel Fattah told Reuters that the assailants came from the direction of an outpost near the village that had been established about two months earlier. He said: “The settlers have been attacking the village continuously since the outpost was established,” he added. These are Abdel Fattah’s attributed statements, not independently established findings in the reports.

Other reported details and what remains unclear

WAFA also reported several detentions and relayed a local source’s claim that an ambulance was held and its key taken. These claims have not been independently resolved in the accounts described above.

Reuters reported that the Israeli military was checking the incident. The reports do not establish whether a formal investigation was opened, whether anyone was identified or arrested in connection with Yassin’s death, or whether the military later issued a fuller account.

Broader West Bank context

Reuters cited the United Nations as saying more than 80 Palestinians had been killed by Israel’s military and settlers in the West Bank since the beginning of 2026. The Reuters report did not give an exact count, identify the underlying UN dataset, or break the figure down by alleged perpetrator.

Reuters also summarized the dispute over settlement legality: the UN and most countries consider Israeli settlements illegal under international law governing military occupations, while Israel disputes that interpretation and says the territory’s status is disputed. That summary describes the positions reported in the article; it is not a full legal analysis.
