Haifa District prosecutors allege that Mohammad Khalaf, 25, consulted ChatGPT and used other AI while carrying out assignments for an Iranian handler. The report does not identify his prompts, the AI model or outputs, or how AI affected the alleged work. These are allegations in an indictment, not a conviction.
What prosecutors reportedly say about the AI use
The Jerusalem Post reported on October 3, 2026, that an indictment filed the previous day alleges Khalaf used AI for some assignments, including consulting ChatGPT. The report does not specify what he asked, what the system returned, or which tasks involved AI. It therefore does not establish that ChatGPT planned the alleged activity, generated intelligence, or had an operational effect.
How the alleged contact began
According to the indictment as described by The Jerusalem Post, Khalaf responded to an offer of courier work posted in a Telegram group for temporary jobs. The account’s user reportedly first called himself “Thomas” and later “Martin.” Prosecutors allege the contact developed into assignments for an Iranian handler, with cryptocurrency payments. The newspaper reports that $50 in Bitcoin was allegedly sent to gain Khalaf’s trust.

The article describes Khalaf as a resident of Baka al-Gharbiya and a security guard at a youth boarding school. Prosecutors reportedly charged him with contact with a foreign agent and sought to keep him in detention through the proceedings.

The same report says he had been arrested by September 6, 2026, and remained in custody when the article was published on October 3. That is a time-specific account of an active proceeding, not confirmation of a later court ruling. The conduct and evidence described remain allegations unless and until established in court.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The published account supports a narrow conclusion: prosecutors allege general AI use, including consultation of ChatGPT, during a series of tasks they characterize as espionage-related. It does not reveal the prompts or outputs, identify a model or version, or show that AI was necessary to complete any assignment. It also does not establish guilt. The Jerusalem Post’s report is a secondary account of an indictment; the underlying filing is not presented in the article.
