Israel alerted its civil aviation authorities, air force and political leadership after Flydubai flight FZ1073 sent emergency signals, Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar said. Israel called fighter jets into the air, but they did not need to act: the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Azar also praised Indian Captain Smit Machchhar for opening the cockpit door and seeking help while under attack.
What was Israel’s response to the Flydubai emergency?
Azar said Israel’s civil aviation authorities, air force and political leadership were alerted after the aircraft sent emergency signals. Fighter jets were then called into the air. “Of course, immediately fighter jets were called into the air and fortunately, they didn’t have to take action,” he said in an interview reported by Hindustan Times.
Azar said the aircraft’s safe landing meant the jets did not need to intervene. He described Israel as assessing the situation and said further action might have had to be considered if those aboard had not regained control. His account does not say that the jets escorted or intercepted the plane.

What happened aboard flight FZ1073?
Flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an incident in the cockpit prompted an emergency and diversion. Azar praised Captain Smit Machchhar for opening the cockpit door and calling for assistance despite being attacked, according to The New Indian Express, which attributed its report to PTI Videos.

Azar credited Israeli passengers, crew members and additional pilots with helping subdue the attacker and regain control. The accounts differ in how they describe the aircraft’s operation after the incident: Azar’s account, reported by The New Indian Express, says additional pilots took control and flew the plane to Saudi Arabia. Flydubai, as quoted by the Associated Press, said on-duty crew secured the aircraft, diverted it and landed it safely. The available accounts do not establish a single named pilot as the person who made the landing.
Where did the plane land, and how many people were aboard?
The aircraft landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Published figures use different scopes: The New Indian Express reported 174 passengers, including 27 children, while the Associated Press reported 182 people aboard. The reports do not fully explain the difference, so the passenger figure and the total number of people aboard should not be treated as interchangeable. Azar separately described “nearly 180 people” as having been saved; that was his approximate description, not a separately verified passenger count.

What is known about the attacker’s motive?
The motive and circumstances were not established in the reporting available. The Associated Press reported that Israel, the UAE and Saudi Arabia were investigating, and that Captain Machchhar was seriously injured. Flydubai said the reasons for the incident remained unknown and urged against premature speculation, according to Al Jazeera. Azar likewise said, “I think that following the investigation of the attacker, we’ll be able to learn more.”
