Steam Packet and Manxman are not competing ferry operators: the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company operates the Manxman. To choose a sailing, compare the date-specific route, departure port, vessel, advertised crossing time, onward connections, total fare and whether you want a cabin or lounge. The operator’s schedules, vessel assignments and prices can change, so confirm the details for your chosen departure in its current sailing and booking flow.

What is the difference between Steam Packet and Manxman?

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is the operator; Manxman is one of its ships. A useful comparison is therefore between routes and sailings that may use Manxman or another vessel—not between two companies. The Liverpool route can use Manxman or Manannan, while the operator describes Manxman as serving Douglas–Heysham daily year-round. Vessel allocation is sailing-specific, so check the ship shown for the departure you intend to book.

Which route should you choose?

The two England routes differ in schedule, crossing time and port access. The times below are the operator’s advertised crossing times, not independently verified door-to-door journey estimates.

Douglas–Heysham Manxman; the operator says service runs daily year-round. 3 hours 45 minutes. Consider it when Heysham’s rail or road access suits your trip.
Douglas–Liverpool Route page lists Manannan and Manxman; described as daily April–October and weekends in winter. 2 hours 45 minutes or 4 hours 15 minutes, depending on sailing. Consider it for Liverpool access, but verify the vessel and time for the selected departure.

Douglas–Heysham: a year-round option

The operator describes the Manxman service between Douglas and Heysham as daily year-round, with a crossing time of 3 hours 45 minutes. The route page also describes service as up to 12 times each week; that is a frequency description, not a promise of a particular day’s departure times. Heysham is next to Heysham Harbour railway station, and the operator says the port connects to the M6 at Junction 34 via the Bay Gateway link road. See the Douglas–Heysham route information for the date-specific schedule.

Douglas–Liverpool: check the sailing, not just the route

The Liverpool route page lists both Manannan and Manxman and advertises two crossing times: 2 hours 45 minutes and 4 hours 15 minutes. The shorter duration is not stated as applying to every departure. The route is described as daily from April through October and on winter weekends; Douglas port information says the seasonal high-speed Manannan service runs April–November, while Manxman serves Liverpool on winter weekends. Because those descriptions concern seasonal schedules and vessel deployment, check the exact date and sailing rather than assuming a vessel or crossing time from the route name alone. The operator’s Liverpool route page provides route details.

How to compare the actual sailing

A shorter crossing may not make a trip faster overall if getting to or from the port takes longer. Compare the whole itinerary and booking details for your date:

  1. Choose the departure port. Check how you will reach Liverpool or Heysham and continue from Douglas. Liverpool sailings use the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal at 1 Triskelion Way, Liverpool, L3 1QW; Heysham’s passenger terminal is at South Quay, Heysham, Lancashire, LA3 2XE.
  2. Check the sailing time and vessel. Confirm which ship is assigned and the advertised crossing duration for that departure. Do not assume every Liverpool sailing takes 2 hours 45 minutes.
  3. Compare the full fare. Search with the intended date, passengers and vehicle, if any. Treat displayed “from” prices as starting points, not as a quote for your party or sailing.
  4. Decide whether you need an onboard upgrade. If you want a cabin, private lounge or pet facility, check availability and price against that specific sailing.
  5. Allow for port check-in and transfers. Review the operator’s current check-in instructions and factor in onward transport at both ends.

Port access and check-in

Liverpool

All Liverpool sailings use the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal at 1 Triskelion Way, Liverpool, L3 1QW. The operator says it is 800 metres downriver from the old Pier Head Landing Stage. Allow for the transfer to the terminal when comparing this route with Heysham.

Heysham

The passenger terminal is at South Quay, Heysham, Lancashire, LA3 2XE. Heysham Harbour railway station is adjacent to the terminal, and the operator says the port connects to the M6 at Junction 34 through the Bay Gateway link road.

Douglas

Douglas Sea Terminal is at IM1 2RF. The operator lists a taxi rank outside the terminal and a bus station about 400 metres away. Its Douglas port page says check-in opens approximately 1 hour 30 minutes before sailing; last check-in is listed as 45 minutes before departure for car passengers and 25 minutes for foot passengers. Re-check the instructions for your booked sailing, as operational guidance may change. See the Douglas port information.

What facilities does Manxman offer?

The operator describes cafes and bars, shops, children’s play areas, outdoor decks, Wi-Fi and onboard entertainment across its onboard experience information. It lists 100 MB of free Wi-Fi per passenger, with paid additional access, and 1 GB of free Wi-Fi in premium lounges. On-demand TV and movies are available through BazePort IPTV. These are the company’s published descriptions, not an independent assessment of service quality; check what is available on your booked sailing.

Cabins, lounges and pets

Manxman cabin options are on deck 8. The operator lists private four-berth internal cabins and executive cabins with double beds and walk-out balconies, as well as private lounge upgrades. Its pet information lists a pet lounge, pet-friendly cabins and an outdoor pet toilet area on Manxman. Check current eligibility, availability and price during booking. The published information does not provide a complete like-for-like inventory of Manxman and Manannan facilities, so it does not establish that one vessel is generally more comfortable or better equipped than the other. Details are on the operator’s onboard experience page.

What do the displayed fares mean?

When the route pages were checked, both displayed car fares from £98.50/€117 each way and foot passenger fares from £26/€31.75 each way. The Liverpool page was marked “Schedule correct as of 07/10/2026”; the Heysham page was marked “Schedule correct as of 06/10/2026.” These are dated, displayed “from” fares—not fixed prices or a total for a particular vehicle, group, cabin or departure. Use a date-specific search with the operator to see the price and fare conditions for your trip: Liverpool fares and sailings or Heysham fares and sailings.

What if your itinerary includes Ireland?

The operator’s route index says services to and from Belfast ceased in December 2025 and a year-round Larne sailing was introduced from April 2026. It also lists Dublin and Larne routes to Ireland and a landbridge service combining ferry travel between England, the Isle of Man and Ireland on one ticket. These routes may help when planning a wider journey, but their availability depends on the date. Check the operator’s route index and date-specific timetable rather than assuming a connection runs on every day.
