Isle of Man Steam Packet Group reported £12.34 million profit attributable to owners for 2025, up from £6.86 million in 2024—close to a doubling. Revenue rose much more modestly, by 3.9% to £90.6 million. The figures and explanations below are from the company’s annual report as reported by Isle of Man Today on 6 October 2026; the audited 2025 accounts were not independently reviewed here.
What does “profits almost double” mean?
The headline refers to profit attributable to owners: £12.34 million in 2025 compared with £6.86 million in 2024. It does not mean revenue nearly doubled. Operating profit, a separate measure, increased from £7.2 million to £12.3 million.
| Measure | 2024 | 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profit attributable to owners | £6.86m | £12.34m | Near doubling |
| Operating profit | £7.2m | £12.3m | Increase |
| Revenue | £87.2m | £90.6m | Up 3.9% |
These figures are from the Steam Packet annual report, as summarized by Isle of Man Today. The much faster increase in profit than revenue indicates that changes beyond higher sales—among them lower operating costs and the absence of a prior-year impairment—also mattered.
What drove the improved result?
The annual-report coverage attributes the performance to increased passenger and freight demand, controlled costs and the absence of an asset impairment recorded in 2024. It does not quantify how much each factor contributed, so no single fare initiative or service change can be credited with the profit increase on its own.
Passenger growth and services
The company carried 682,907 passengers in 2025, a record and an 8.2% increase on 2024. Ticket revenue rose 2.6%, while passenger-service revenue rose 12.9%. The company reportedly linked the latter to passenger growth, awareness of Manxman’s lounge and cabin offers, and improvements to catering and retail.
The company also cited Manxman’s winter weekend Liverpool service and its children-go-free initiative as contributors to passenger growth. More than 69,000 children travelled under the scheme in 2025, according to the report coverage.

Freight, charters and operating costs
Freight meterage increased 4.3%, but freight revenue fell 1.8%. The company attributed the revenue decline to lower market-linked fuel surcharges under the Sea Services Agreement. Meanwhile, charters of Arrow and Ben-my-Chree generated £4.4 million, compared with £2.4 million in 2024.
Operating costs fell 3%. The company attributed the reduction to lower global fuel prices and improved port charges. The reported figures do not break out the precise contribution of each cost change to profit.

How does the pricing reset fit in?
In its February 2026 review, the Steam Packet said a pricing reset was announced in October 2024 after public feedback. Its listed measures were:
- Kids Go Free for children under 16 on scheduled sailings.
- A 10% reduction from 2024 Flexi Fare prices.
- Harmonised freight rates.
- Online booking for private vans.
The company said it intended to retain Kids Go Free and the Flexi Fare reduction in 2026. These measures provide context for the company’s pricing approach, but the available figures do not isolate their individual effects on 2025 profit.

What do the debt and public-finance figures show?
Reported net debt fell from £114.7 million at the end of 2024 to £96.2 million at the end of 2025. During 2025, the company repaid £5.2 million of debt and paid £2.3 million in interest to its parent, the Isle of Man Treasury. It also declared and paid a £1 million dividend.

The company says its day-to-day operations are financed from its own revenue and that it operates without public subsidy. That statement should not be confused with an absence of public financial involvement: the company also says a government-secured loan facility and its interest are carried on its balance sheet, and it reported the repayments above. The company’s wording and context appear in its February 2026 update.

The company’s February 2026 update said 256 sailings to and from Ireland were scheduled for 2026, compared with 108 in 2025. It also listed 2,239 sailings to English ports scheduled for 2026, compared with 2,039 operated in 2025. These are not like-for-like completed-year comparisons: the 2026 figures were schedules, while the cited 2025 figures were sailings operated.
The update described Ben-my-Chree’s refit and its Ireland role, including three weekly sailings to Larne from late July and two weekly return crossings to Dublin during part of the year. Those statements describe the company’s plans at the time of the February update, not a final count of completed 2026 services.
How firm is the reported financial picture?
The current profit, revenue and operational figures are attributed to the annual report by Isle of Man Today; they were not independently checked against the audited 2025 accounts here. The available company and Tynwald materials concern earlier reporting: Companies House filing history lists group accounts through 31 December 2024, and a Tynwald document lists the company’s and group’s 2024 statements.
