Not necessarily. 54 Mbps is the maximum nominal data rate of Wi-Fi 802.11g, a wireless networking standard ratified in 2003—not a security protocol. The separate 802.11i amendment defines Wi-Fi security mechanisms. A router using old Wi-Fi hardware could limit wireless performance, but the information in the headline alone cannot establish that your router uses 802.11g or that its security setting is slowing it down.
What does 54 Mbps mean?
IEEE 802.11g operates in the 2.4 GHz band and supports a nominal data rate of up to 54 Mbit/s. IEEE Technology Navigator lists its ratification in June 2003 and the 54 Mbit/s maximum rate: IEEE 802.11g standard reference.
That figure describes the standard’s wireless data rate ceiling. It is not a promise that a speed test, file transfer, or internet connection will reach 54 Mbps. The cited standard reference does not quantify real-world application throughput or the speed of any particular broadband service.

No. 802.11g is a Wi-Fi radio and data-rate amendment; 802.11i-2004 is the distinct security amendment. The IEEE Standards Association describes 802.11i-2004 as defining security mechanisms for IEEE 802.11, including TKIP and CCMP. The amendment is listed in the IEEE 802.11-2024 catalogue: IEEE 802.11-2024 listing.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
So a router described as using a “2003 security protocol” may be mixing up the date and role of 802.11g with the separate security work of 802.11i. The year attached to a Wi-Fi standard does not, on its own, tell you which security mode the router currently uses.
Can an old router hold Wi-Fi to 54 Mbps?
If the router is actually operating with 802.11g capability, its nominal wireless rate ceiling is 54 Mbit/s. That is a plausible hardware or configuration constraint to investigate, but it does not prove why a particular device is slow. The title provides no router model, firmware, connected-device capabilities, security configuration, broadband plan, or measured speed.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Later Wi-Fi generations can support higher throughput. IEEE describes 802.11n-2009 as enabling higher-throughput modes, including one capable of at least 100 Mb/s measured at the MAC data service access point: IEEE 802.11n-2009 reference. This is a standards capability, not a diagnosis of an individual connection or a guarantee of internet speed.

- Identify the router model. Check the label on the router or its administration interface, then consult the maker’s specifications to find its supported Wi-Fi generations. Do not assume it uses 802.11g based only on its age or a security warning.
- Check the connected device’s Wi-Fi capability. The phone, computer, or other client also needs to support a newer generation to use that generation’s capabilities.
- Inspect the configured security mode. Look in the router’s wireless or Wi-Fi security settings. Record the selected mode before changing it; the standard name and the encryption/authentication setting are related concepts, but they are not interchangeable.
- Compare a wired and wireless speed test. A wired result can help separate a Wi-Fi limitation from an internet-service limitation. Compare like conditions and account for the broadband speed you pay for; no single result identifies a cause without the router and client details.
- Use the evidence to decide whether to change anything. Do not assume that changing a security option alone will remove a 54 Mbps ceiling. Confirm the router’s Wi-Fi capability and configuration first, and follow its manufacturer’s guidance when adjusting security.
When should you replace the router?
Consider replacing it if you confirm that the router’s Wi-Fi generation or a confirmed configuration constraint is limiting your needs, or if it no longer supports security appropriate for your devices. A newer-generation router that supports WPA2 or WPA3 may be a relevant option, but check compatibility with your devices and broadband service rather than choosing by a headline rate alone.
