The often-quoted $78 monthly internet figure is a median price across a sample of broadband plans, not the average bill paid by every U.S. household. If your bill feels high, check the full charges and promotion terms, compare plans available at your address, and ask your provider about lower-cost options. If you qualify, Lifeline may also help; the Affordable Connectivity Program is no longer active.
What the $78 internet figure actually measures
A California Public Utilities Commission report cites a CNET survey of 150 broadband plans from 27 providers. The survey found a $78 median monthly price across service tiers, including equipment rental. That is a midpoint among sampled plan prices—not a measurement of what all American households pay.
Other published estimates differ because they use different plan sets and methods. Reviews.org reported an average plan price of $68.36 per month in 2025 across nearly 100 major providers. BroadbandNow reported an $81.16 national average for active internet-only residential plans as of March 25, 2026, based on analysis of more than 2,100 providers. These figures describe plan prices, not a directly comparable tally of household bills.

How to find what is driving your bill
Compare the bill with your original offer
Find the first bill, order confirmation, or service agreement and check the advertised price, the promotion end date, and what the regular price was supposed to be. Compare those terms with your latest statement. A higher total may reflect a promotion ending, a recurring charge, a one-time fee, or a combination.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Separate recurring charges from one-time fees
List the base internet price separately from equipment rental, installation or activation charges, taxes, and other service fees. If a line item is unclear, ask the provider what it covers, whether it recurs, and when it will stop. Reviews.org’s 2025 consumer survey found that half of its respondents said their first internet bill was higher than expected; its findings also discuss equipment rental and other added charges.
That survey also reported an average monthly increase of $20.78 among respondents whose internet bill rose. It is a survey finding about those respondents, not a forecast of how much your own bill may change.

How to compare plans without being misled by the advertised price
Check offers available for your exact service address. Compare the ongoing price after any introductory period, not just the price featured in an ad. The FCC broadband label is intended to display price and speed information at the point of sale. On a provider’s shopping page, the label may be in a drop-down menu or farther down the page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Total recurring cost: Include the price after a promotion ends and any recurring equipment or service charges.
- One-time costs: Check installation, activation, and other fees separately.
- Service details: Compare download and upload speeds and any data terms.
- Commitments: Check contract length, cancellation terms, and how long any price guarantee lasts.
- Equipment: Find out whether the provider supports customer-owned equipment and what the rental charge is.
A low introductory rate may not be the least expensive choice over time. Use the label and the provider’s full terms to compare the cost and service you would actually receive.

What to ask your provider
Contact customer service and ask whether a lower service tier, a current promotion, or a different equipment arrangement is available for your account. Ask for the full recurring price and any changed terms before agreeing. A lower price is not guaranteed, so compare any offer with other plans available at your address.
When customer-owned equipment may reduce rental costs
Some cable customers may be able to avoid a modem rental by using a customer-owned DOCSIS 3.1 modem, but compatibility is provider- and service-specific. Before buying, check the ISP’s supported-device list and confirm that the modem works with your connection and any bundled voice service.

Compare the device’s one-time cost with the rental charges over the period you expect to use it. This option does not apply to every provider or connection, and a modem should not be assumed compatible without the provider’s confirmation.
Check Lifeline, but do not rely on ACP signup claims
Lifeline is a current assistance option for eligible households
USAC says a household may qualify for Lifeline through participation in certain programs, including SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or Federal Public Housing Assistance, or through income at or below 135% of the 2026 Federal Poverty Guidelines. Income limits depend on household size and state or location. Check USAC’s current eligibility rules to see whether your household qualifies.

The Affordable Connectivity Program has ended
The FCC says the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and its monthly broadband discount ended on June 1, 2024. Be cautious of websites that still claim to enroll people in ACP or ask for personal information to provide its benefits. The FCC directs consumers to its complaint process for misleading claims.
