Xbox Game Pass is worth considering if the games you will actually play during a paid month would cost more to buy—or if you will use other benefits included in the tier. A big catalog alone is not a saving. Compare the price of the specific games you want with the price of the plan that includes them, then factor in how long you need access.
How to decide whether Game Pass saves you money
Start with the games you expect to play, not the size of the catalog. Compare their individual purchase prices with one month of the Game Pass tier that includes them. There is no universal number of games per month that makes a subscription worthwhile: one expensive game could justify a month for one player, while several inexpensive games might not.
- List the games you realistically expect to play. Check that each one is currently available for your plan, platform, and region.
- Add up what buying those games would cost. Use the prices you would actually pay, including any discounts you can access.
- Compare that total with the relevant subscription cost. If you need a particular feature, include only a tier that provides it.
- Consider your play schedule. A subscription may suit you if you can finish or enjoy a game within the paid period. If you play slowly or take long breaks, buying a game may be better value.
- Count bundled benefits only if you would use them. Online multiplayer, cloud gaming, EA Play, or other included features can change the calculation, but unused benefits do not make a plan valuable to you.
Which Game Pass tier fits your games and devices?
Xbox’s US overview lists four plans, with different libraries and features. The displayed catalog counts are approximate and can change; Xbox says availability and features vary by plan, platform, region, and over time. Check the current library for the specific titles you want before subscribing.
| Plan | Xbox’s displayed library count | Notable features described by Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games | Online console multiplayer and in-game benefits; no new releases on day one. |
| Premium | 200+ games | New Xbox-published games join the library within one year of launch, with stated exceptions. |
| Ultimate | 500+ games | Access across console, PC, and supported devices; day-one releases and additional bundled features. |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games | Day-one titles and EA Play; cloud gaming is not included. |
For readers in the United States, Xbox’s comparison page displayed Ultimate at $22.99 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month after a limited introductory offer of 14 days for $1. These are page values checked in 2026, not permanent or worldwide prices; promotions may be restricted to eligible subscribers or markets. Check Xbox’s current plan comparison for the price and offer available to you.

When a subscription is a poor fit for a light player
- You play the same few games repeatedly. If you already own them, a broad library may add little value.
- You need more time than one paid period. You can lose access when your subscription ends or a title leaves the library, even if you have not finished it.
- You take months off. Paying during months when you do not play can make buying selected games, or subscribing only for particular months, a better fit.
- You are paying for features you do not need. Choose a lower tier or no subscription if multiplayer, cloud gaming, day-one releases, or other extras are not relevant to you.
Understand access and manage renewal
Game Pass provides access, not permanent ownership. Xbox says library access lasts while your subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. If you cancel or the subscription expires, or the game leaves the library, you will need another way to play it.

Recurring billing is enabled by default, according to Xbox. If you only want a short subscription, turn off recurring billing through your Microsoft account or console before the next billing date. Xbox also describes a possible one-time refund for a recent recurring charge when requested within 30 days after payment, subject to its terms; cancellation does not mean every charge is refundable. See Xbox’s subscription and access information for current details.
