For threaded steam-pipe joints, X-Pando Pipe Joint Compound is the product in this comparison specifically described for superheated steam. It is a water-mixed powder that expands as it sets, so its mixing, thread preparation, and setup time matter. Its manufacturer also publishes broad pressure and temperature maxima, but those figures do not establish a safe combined rating for any particular steam connection.
Which thread sealants are relevant to steam work?
X-Pando Pipe Joint Compound
X-Pando Products Company describes X-Pando as an expanding pipe-joint compound and lists superheated steam among its services. The dry powder is mixed with clean water before use, then applied to threaded pipe. This makes it the directly relevant named product here for X-Pando threaded-joint applications. Chesterton 800 GoldEnd Tape
Chesterton 800 GoldEnd Tape is a different kind of thread sealant: dry PTFE tape that the manufacturer describes as non-aging and non-hardening. Steam is included among its liquid applications, and the catalog gives a range of -240°C to 260°C (-400°F to 500°F). It is an alternative to assess on its own merits, not an expanding cement or an equivalent form of X-Pando. Chesterton 800 GoldEnd Tape
Compare the material and application instructions, the condition and cleanliness of the threads, fluid compatibility, setup behavior, the stated temperature range, and the actual pressure and temperature together. Neither source establishes an application-specific pressure-temperature rating for a particular installation.
#1 Best Overall
- Economical general-purpose fitting sealant
- Outperforms tapes and pipe dopes
- Seals and resists pressure in air, oil, diesel fuel and hydraulic systems
- Remains pliable at higher and lower temperatures
- Suggested Applications: Air conditioning fittings, temperature sending fittings, hydraulic fittings
What do X-Pando’s published pressure and temperature claims mean?
X-Pando’s product page reports a maximum pressure of “up to 5000 psig” and a maximum temperature of “1000°F,” as well as a low-temperature claim of “-300°F.” It also gives an expansion claim of “from .002" to .004" per cubic inch.” These are manufacturer-reported figures; the product page does not explain a joint-specific engineering basis or state that the maximum pressure and maximum temperature can be used simultaneously. Do not treat them as the allowable operating limits for a steam line. Confirm suitability for the connection’s design and operating conditions with current manufacturer guidance and the responsible engineering authority. X-Pando product information
How do you apply X-Pando to threaded pipe?
- Prepare the threads. Remove debris and cutting oil. X-Pando’s FAQ emphasizes clean threads, especially on stainless steel; contamination can leave a gap that allows leakage.
- Mix the compound. In a clean container, combine about five parts powder to one part clean water and mix to a thick paste consistency.
- Coat the male threads. Brush or spread the compound across the first four male threads. The FAQ says filling more than six threads is unnecessary and wasteful.
- Allow setup. Under normal temperature and atmospheric conditions, the manufacturer states that setup takes about 24 hours. Its FAQ says low city-pressure joints may be used earlier, but recommends waiting until the compound is fully set for high-pressure or damaged joints.
These are the manufacturer’s general instructions, not a substitute for project specifications or a qualified assessment of a steam installation. Read the current product directions before use. X-Pando FAQ

- APPLICATION: RectorSeal No.5 is a non-hardening, slow-drying thread sealant made from special inert fillers dispersed in an oleoresinous base to facilitate its application to threaded pipe connections
- SOFT SETTING: Our pipe thread sealant is a soft-set, slow drying compound which seals, lubricates, and protects threaded pipe and fittings and will not dry out in the container
- POTABLE WATER SEALANT: RectorSeal No.5 pipe dope thread sealant lubricates and protects pipe threads; contains no metal; permits easy break out with no damage to threads
- PIPE COMPATIBILITY: For pipe made of galvanized steel, iron, brass, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, polyethylene, reinforced fiberglass, and pvc. do not use on abs or cpvc; for natural gas and water lines up to 2" and pressure up to 100 psi, the piping system may be placed into immediate service; other services are recommended 24 hours after application
- FOR THE TRADESMAN: RectorSeal is recognized as a leading provider of quality solutions for the professional trades serving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC/R), plumbing, electrical, and construction markets
Can you speed up X-Pando’s setup?
The FAQ lists heat lamps, infrared bulbs, heat guns, or torches as ways to accelerate drying, but sets a strict limit: “DO NOT HEAT ABOVE 200°F. Higher heat may create steam and possibly fracture the X-Pando.” Do not exceed that temperature to hasten drying. If the joint is high-pressure or damaged, the FAQ advises waiting until the material is entirely set rather than relying on early use. X-Pando FAQ
What fluid and approval checks matter?
Fluid compatibility
The X-Pando FAQ says the compound is not recommended for sealing liquids below pH 2 or above pH 12. For steam service or any other fluid, check the current manufacturer guidance for the actual application rather than assuming compatibility from a broad product description. X-Pando FAQ

Certifications and safety documents
X-Pando’s certification page lists manufacturer-published UL performance classification and NSF/ANSI 61 and 372-related claims, among other approvals or contract references. Before relying on a certification, verify that the current listing covers the exact product and intended application in the relevant third-party directory. A manufacturer SDS is also available; consult the current SDS for hazard and handling information before use. X-Pando certifications X-Pando Safety Data Sheet

- Chesterton 783 ACR: Chesterton positions this anti-seize compound to help with assembly and disassembly of threaded components, not as the thread-joint sealant in this comparison. Chesterton 783 ACR
- Chesterton 185: This expanded PTFE form-in-place gasket is listed for applications including steam-vessel flanges. A flange gasket is not a threaded-pipe sealant. Chesterton 185
Distinguishing these products by joint type helps prevent selecting a maintenance material for a job it was not presented to perform.
