WooCommerce’s core software is free to download and use, with no monthly platform subscription or revenue share listed by WooCommerce. Running a live store can still cost money for hosting, payment processing, optional extensions, development, maintenance, and other services. In other words, the platform is free; operating a store is not necessarily free.

What “free” means for WooCommerce

WooCommerce’s pricing page lists the core platform at $0, with no monthly subscription and no revenue share. Those terms describe the platform itself, not every service a store needs to operate. WooCommerce’s figures and examples below are vendor-published and were verified on October 7, 2026; they are planning information, not a quote for a particular merchant.

WooCommerce’s pricing page groups potential expenses across hosting, transactions, development, and extensions. The amount a store spends depends on its requirements and the services it chooses.

Which costs might a WooCommerce store have?

Cost category What WooCommerce’s published information says What can affect your cost
Core platform $0; no monthly subscription, according to WooCommerce. This is the software fee, not a total operating-cost estimate.
Hosting WooCommerce gives an illustrative range of $25–$350 per month for most stores. Store traffic, performance needs, support, and the hosting plan. The range is not a universal quote.
Extensions WooCommerce gives an illustrative range of $29–$299 per year per extension. Its marketplace also lists free products. Which features you need, whether a free option is sufficient, and the listing’s current price and support terms.
Payment processing WooCommerce says it does not add its own transaction fee. Payment providers may charge their own fees. Merchant location, payment methods, transaction volume, and any provider or gateway charges.
Development and other services WooCommerce’s cost calculator includes development; its sample budgets also include maintenance and third-party services. Store complexity, ongoing work, services required, and whether you do the work or hire someone.

Hosting and extensions are separate choices

Hosting

WooCommerce’s published estimate of $25–$350 per month for most stores is a broad planning range, not a price that every merchant will pay. Compare plans based on expected traffic, performance requirements, and the support included; the figure does not identify a provider or guarantee that a particular plan will suit your store.

Extensions

Extensions add functions to a store, but not every store needs paid add-ons. WooCommerce lists an illustrative price range of $29–$299 per year per extension and also offers free marketplace products. Check the current listing for the price, update and support terms, and whether it does what your store requires before budgeting for it.

Does WooCommerce charge transaction fees?

WooCommerce says it does not add a transaction fee of its own. That does not make payment processing free: a gateway or processor may charge fees, and rates and availability vary by provider and location.

As one specifically scoped example, WooCommerce lists a WooPayments starting rate of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for US-issued cards. This is a United States example, not a rate for all countries, cards, or payment providers. WooCommerce’s WooPayments fees information should be checked for the applicable details.

A gateway’s cost may include more than a per-transaction charge. WooCommerce’s payment gateway documentation says fees can include the gateway plugin, signup charges, monthly or yearly subscriptions, and transaction fees. It recommends considering cost, location, security, subscription support, and in-person payment support when choosing a gateway.

How to estimate your store’s total

  1. Start with required functions. List what the store must do, such as accept payments or support subscriptions, rather than assuming every available extension is necessary.
  2. Choose a hosting plan that fits the store. Use WooCommerce’s hosting range as a planning reference, then compare actual plan terms against your expected traffic, performance needs, and support requirements.
  3. Check payment costs for your location and payment mix. Review applicable transaction rates as well as any signup, recurring, or gateway-plugin charges. Do not use the US-issued-card example as a worldwide rate.
  4. Include build and ongoing work. Account for development, maintenance, and third-party services if your implementation requires them; these costs vary with the store and how it is managed.
  5. Price only the extensions you need. Check current marketplace listings and compare the paid feature with any free option that meets the requirement.

WooCommerce’s cost calculator covers platform and hosting, transactions, development, and extensions. It asks for business and store information, so it is not an estimate that can be applied without entering those inputs.

Why there is no single WooCommerce store price

A store using the free core software and a store with paid hosting, custom development, several extensions, and ongoing services can have very different budgets. WooCommerce’s pricing page presents merchant examples, including a European boutique with $2 million in annual revenue and a US subscription coffee brand with $300 million in annual revenue. These are company-published illustrations, not independent statistics or estimates of what a typical store costs. Use them as examples of how requirements can shape a budget, not as a price prediction for your business.
