Yes—Microsoft Defender is good enough for most Windows users in 2025, provided Windows itself is supported, Windows Update works, and you leave its main protections enabled. It includes real-time antivirus, cloud-based detection, firewall integration, SmartScreen, exploit mitigations, ransomware controls, and several useful scanning options.

That does not mean every default setting is ideal, or that Defender makes an unsupported PC safe. Windows 10 Home and Pro version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Continuing Defender security-intelligence updates do not turn an out-of-support operating system into a supported one. Windows 11 Home and Pro remain supported, although each release has its own retirement date.

The short answer

For a normal home PC, Defender is usually sufficient when you:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Run a supported Windows 11 release.
  • Install Windows and application updates promptly.
  • Keep real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection, and tamper protection enabled.
  • Use a standard user account for everyday work where practical.
  • Do not approve unexpected administrator prompts or run suspicious downloads.
  • Keep important files backed up independently of the PC.

You may want a paid security suite if you need central management for several devices, parental controls, identity-monitoring features, a VPN, extra support, or protection for operating systems and devices outside the Windows ecosystem. Installing another antivirus purely because Defender is free is not automatically an improvement.

First check what is actually protecting the PC

Windows Security is the control panel, not necessarily the name of the active antivirus product. A compatible third-party antivirus normally causes Microsoft Defender Antivirus to turn off or enter passive mode rather than run as two fully active antivirus engines.

  1. Open Start, type Windows Security, and select the app.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Manage providers.

The provider cards show the active Antivirus, Firewall, and Web protection products. If the cards do not match what you expect—for example, Defender remains disabled after uninstalling another antivirus—the problem may be a leftover policy conflict rather than a broken Windows Security app.

For the app version and policy information, open Windows Security > Settings > About.

What Defender does well

Real-time malware protection

Defender scans files as they are opened and downloaded, while cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission can improve detection of newer threats. The controls are at:

Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings > Manage settings

For a general-purpose PC, these should normally remain enabled:

  • Real-time protection
  • Cloud-delivered protection
  • Automatic sample submission
  • Tamper protection

Turning off real-time protection is not a harmless performance tweak. While it is disabled, files opened or downloaded are not scanned by real-time protection, although scheduled scans continue. Windows normally turns real-time protection back on after a short period, but you should not rely on that safety net.

Tamper protection prevents other applications from changing protected Defender settings. An administrator can still change those settings inside Windows Security, but an application cannot silently alter them in the same way.

Scan Best use
Quick scan A routine check of common locations and active areas.
Full scan A more thorough scan of the system; schedule it when the PC can tolerate a long period of disk activity.
Custom scan Checking a particular file, folder, or removable drive.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) Suspected persistent malware that may hide while normal Windows is running.

An offline scan restarts the PC and runs in the Windows Recovery Environment without loading normal Windows. It restarts the PC again when complete. Check the result at Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.

Firewall and network protection

The Firewall & network protection area covers the Windows firewall profiles. Unless you have a specific, tested reason to replace it, the built-in firewall is an effective baseline for a home computer. Be cautious when an application asks to communicate through the firewall: allowing a program is a network-access decision, not merely a compatibility fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SmartScreen and reputation checks

Open Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection. The available controls include:

  • Check apps and files
  • SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge
  • Phishing protection
  • Potentially unwanted app blocking
  • SmartScreen for Microsoft Store apps

SmartScreen checks websites and downloads for known malicious content, phishing, and technical-support scams. Potentially unwanted app blocking is useful for installers that are not classic malware but may add unwanted software, advertising, or risky changes.

Phishing protection is a Windows 11 feature and is not available in Windows 10. It protects the password used to sign in to Windows 11 and can warn if that password is typed into a malicious website, suspicious application, Notepad, or Microsoft 365 application. It does not protect every password you use.

Ransomware protection is valuable—but can interrupt legitimate apps

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage ransomware protection. The important feature is Controlled folder access. When enabled, it protects common folders such as Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, and Desktop by default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This can stop an untrusted process from changing your files, but it can also block a legitimate application that saves to a protected folder. Do not respond by disabling the feature permanently. Instead:

  1. Open Manage ransomware protection > Protected folders to review or add protected locations.
  2. For a blocked, trusted program, select Allow an app through Controlled folder access.
  3. Choose Add an allowed app and browse to the program’s actual executable.

Only allow software you recognize and obtained from a trustworthy source. An allowed program has permission to modify protected files, so adding a broad launcher or an unknown executable defeats much of the feature’s value.

Do not solve every compatibility problem with an exclusion

Defender exclusions are at Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings > Manage settings > Exclusions > Add or remove exclusions. You can exclude a File, Folder, File type, or Process.

An exclusion applies to Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time scanning. Scheduled Defender scans, on-demand scans, and third-party security products may still scan the item. A process exclusion covers files opened by that process; Microsoft recommends specifying the full path and filename. Excluding only a process name can allow malware using the same name to evade scanning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples of supported patterns include:

C:MyProcess*
test.*
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%CustomLogFilestest.exe

Use the narrowest possible exclusion and remove it when the software no longer needs it. Excluding an entire download folder, user profile, or system drive is a serious reduction in protection.

Smart App Control has a sharp edge

On supported Windows 11 systems, Windows Security > App & browser control > Smart App Control settings offers Evaluation mode, On, and Off.

Evaluation mode observes activity without blocking applications. Once evaluation completes—or you manually switch Smart App Control on or off—the device normally cannot return to Evaluation mode without resetting or reinstalling Windows. Microsoft’s current documentation is inconsistent about exactly when a reset or reinstall is required to enable or re-enable it, so do not treat a clean installation as an unconditional requirement.

Smart App Control can block unsigned or unknown applications. It may also block installers or updates that use Windows Installer Transform (.mst) files, because MST files cannot currently be digitally signed. There is no per-application bypass button. If a legitimate application is blocked, the documented choices are to obtain a properly signed version from its developer or turn Smart App Control off.

Windows 10 changes the answer

Windows 10 Home and Pro version 22H2 ended support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s lifecycle table displays the retirement timestamp as October 15, 2025, 6:59:59 AM Pacific Time. Existing LTSC releases have separate lifecycles.

Defender security-intelligence updates can continue on an out-of-support Windows release, but that does not provide the full operating-system security updates and servicing that a supported Windows release receives. In 2025, a Windows 10 PC may therefore have a current Defender definition and still be running an unsupported operating system.

Windows 11 Home and Pro release dates listed by Microsoft are:

Windows 11 release Listed end date
24H2 October 14, 2026
25H2 October 13, 2027
26H1 March 15, 2028

Check your edition and version with Settings > System > About. If the computer cannot run a supported Windows 11 release, upgrading the security suite is not a complete solution. Replace or upgrade the operating system, move to a supported device, or isolate the old computer from sensitive activity.

When Windows Security settings are gray

A setting that cannot be changed may be centrally managed. Defender configuration can come from Group Policy, Intune or other MDM, Configuration Manager, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, PowerShell, WMI, or the registry. Using multiple management methods can create conflicts, so organizations should choose one authoritative method.

On a managed PC, do not fight the local Windows Security interface. Ask the administrator or identify the policy that owns the setting. Microsoft’s documented Group Policy report command is:

GpResult.exe /h C:tempGpResult_output.html

For Intune MDM diagnostics, Microsoft documents:

mdmdiagnosticstool.exe -out "c:tempMDMDiagReport.zip"

After uninstalling third-party antivirus, a policy conflict can also prevent Defender from starting. Rebooting may not fix that; remove the old product completely and check whether an organization policy is still applied.

Useful Defender commands

For command-line work, open Command Prompt as administrator. MpCmdRun.exe is not normally in the system PATH, so first change to a Defender directory such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
cd /d "C:Program FilesWindows Defender"

On some installations, the current platform is under:

C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows DefenderPlatform<antimalware platform version>

The general syntax is:

MpCmdRun.exe -Command [-CommandOptions]

Examples:

MpCmdRun.exe -Scan
MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 1
MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 2
MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 3 -File "C:pathfile-or-folder"
MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate
MpCmdRun.exe -ValidateMapsConnection

Scan types are 0 for default, 1 for quick, 2 for full, and 3 for custom. A plain -Scan normally runs a quick scan unless device policy specifies another default.

If you see MpCmdRun.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file, the usual cause is that you are not in one of the Defender directories. A scan return code of 0 means no malware was found or detected malware was successfully remediated. Return code 2 means malware was not remediated, user action is required, or a scanning error occurred.

Verdict

Defender is good enough for most people in 2025, and its value is higher when combined with SmartScreen, a working firewall, Controlled folder access, current backups, and sensible browsing habits. It is not a substitute for a supported operating system, patching, account security, or user judgment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical baseline is simple: use supported Windows 11 where possible, confirm the active providers, keep the main Defender controls enabled, scan suspicious files rather than opening them, and treat exclusions and Smart App Control overrides as exceptions—not routine troubleshooting steps.

FAQ

Is Microsoft Defender enough without another antivirus?

For most home users, yes. Keep real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection, automatic sample submission, SmartScreen, firewall protection, and Windows updates enabled. A paid suite is mainly useful for extra features, central management, or broader device coverage.

Is Windows Defender still safe on Windows 10 after October 2025?

Defender security-intelligence updates may continue, but Windows 10 Home and Pro version 22H2 is out of support after October 14, 2025. Definition updates do not replace operating-system security updates. Use a supported Windows 11 release or another supported platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I turn on Controlled folder access?

It is a useful ransomware defense, especially for documents and personal files. Turn it on under Manage ransomware protection and allow individual trusted applications only when Windows blocks a legitimate save operation.

Does turning off real-time protection stop every Defender scan?

No. Files opened or downloaded while it is off are not scanned by real-time protection, but scheduled scans continue. Windows also normally turns real-time protection back on after a short period.

Can I allow one app through Smart App Control?

No. Microsoft currently provides no per-application bypass. Obtain a properly signed version from the developer or turn Smart App Control off.

Why is a Defender setting unavailable or grayed out?

The setting may be controlled by Group Policy, Intune or another MDM system, Configuration Manager, Defender for Endpoint, PowerShell, WMI, or the registry. On a work or school PC, the administrator or applied policy owns the setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Microsoft Defender is a capable baseline and is good enough for most Windows 11 users in 2025. Its protection is strongest when the operating system is still supported and its defaults are not weakened. On Windows 10 Home or Pro after October 14, 2025, the bigger problem is the unsupported operating system—not the fact that Defender is free.
