Yes—Windows 10 can still be good for gaming if it runs the games you play and your hardware, drivers, and anti-cheat software are supported. The important change is that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system did not stop working, but Microsoft no longer provides its regular software updates, security updates, or technical support. Whether to stay or upgrade therefore depends on compatibility, your PC’s performance, and how you weigh the security trade-off.

Can you still play games on Windows 10?

Yes. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to function after support ends; games do not automatically stop launching because of the end-of-support date. A particular game may still require a supported Windows version, a specific DirectX capability, current graphics drivers, or compatible anti-cheat software. Check the requirements and support notes for the games you actually play, along with your GPU maker’s driver information.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides Windows 10 software updates, security updates or fixes, or technical support. Microsoft warns that devices without continued security updates are at greater risk from viruses and malware. The consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program can provide security updates until October 12, 2027, according to Microsoft; check its current eligibility and enrollment terms before relying on it. What determines gaming compatibility and performance?

The game’s requirements

Compatibility is specific to the game and PC. Compare each game’s minimum and recommended requirements with your processor, graphics card, memory, storage, and Windows version. Also check the publisher’s support information for any Windows-version or anti-cheat requirements. There is no comprehensive current compatibility list that can establish whether every game will work on an unspecified Windows 10 system.

DirectX and graphics hardware

DirectX is a set of Windows components that helps games communicate with video and audio hardware. Microsoft says a game may not work properly if the PC does not have the required DirectX version. To check the installed version, search Windows for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and look at the System tab. Microsoft says Windows 10 and Windows 11 receive the latest DirectX version available for their respective Windows versions through Windows Update; that does not mean every Windows version supports the newest DirectX release. A DirectX version check also does not prove that the GPU meets a game’s requirements. Microsoft: How to install the latest version of DirectX Microsoft: Open and run DxDiag.exe

Drivers, anti-cheat, and the rest of the PC

Even when Windows and DirectX meet a game’s requirements, the graphics driver, anti-cheat software, or another hardware component can affect whether the game runs correctly. Check the game publisher’s support page and the GPU vendor’s available drivers for your particular hardware. If the game runs poorly, compare the PC’s components with that game’s requirements rather than assuming the operating system alone is the cause.

Is Windows 10 faster than Windows 11 for gaming?

There is no universal answer supported by the available official product documentation. It does not provide a broad, controlled Windows 10-versus-Windows 11 FPS benchmark. Frame rates depend on the exact game, PC hardware, driver, settings, and operating-system version, so a claim that either version is always faster would overreach the evidence.

For context only, Valve’s optional, anonymous Steam Hardware & Software Survey reported Windows 11 64-bit at 59.84% and Windows 10 64-bit at 35.69% in June 2025. Those are dated shares among surveyed Steam users—not a census of all PC gamers, a compatibility measure, or evidence of which OS gets more FPS. Valve: Steam Hardware & Software Survey

What gaming features does Windows 11 add?

Windows 11 includes gaming features that may matter if your games and display support them. Their availability is not proof that Windows 11 will raise average frame rates in every game.

  • Auto HDR: On an HDR-capable display, Windows can expand the color range and brightness of some older SDR games. Microsoft: Use Auto HDR for better gaming
  • Optimizations for windowed games: For compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode, Windows 11 can move games to a flip model, reduce frame latency, and enable Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. Microsoft: Optimizations for windowed games

In an October 2021 Windows Experience Blog post, Microsoft said Auto HDR would automatically upgrade more than 1,000 DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games on an HDR-capable display. That was a statement at the time, not a current compatibility count. The same post said games that implement DirectStorage could benefit from reduced loading times when paired with an NVMe SSD and a DirectX 12 GPU; it does not mean every game uses DirectStorage. How to decide whether to stay on Windows 10 or upgrade

Consideration Staying on Windows 10 Moving to Windows 11
Your games Reasonable if the games you play run properly and their publishers continue to support your setup. Consider it if a game or its anti-cheat requires Windows 11, or you want a Windows 11 feature that your setup supports.
Your PC Keep using it if it meets your games’ requirements and you accept the support trade-off. Check Windows 11 eligibility before buying parts or a replacement PC.
Support and security Regular Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025; an eligible consumer device may receive ESU updates until October 12, 2027. Windows 11 is the supported upgrade path for eligible PCs under Microsoft’s migration guidance.

Check whether your PC is eligible

Microsoft recommends its PC Health Check app to assess Windows 11 compatibility. Minimum requirements include a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card, TPM 2.0, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, at least 4 GB of RAM, and at least 64 GB of storage. These are operating-system minimums, not recommended gaming specifications; a PC can meet them and still fall short of a game’s requirements. Microsoft describes a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs. Microsoft: Windows 11 specifications and system requirements Microsoft: Ways to install Windows 11 Microsoft: Meet Windows 11 system requirements

Choose based on your situation

  • Stay for now: Your games work, your drivers and anti-cheat remain compatible, and you understand that Windows 10 no longer receives regular security updates.
  • Upgrade: Your PC is eligible and you want Windows 11’s supported operating-system path or a relevant feature such as Auto HDR.
  • Replace the PC: Your current hardware cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, no longer meets the requirements of the games you want to play, or needs replacement for another reason. A new PC is not necessary just because Windows 10 still operates.

Make a performance comparison only with results for the same PC configuration, game, settings, and relevant driver and OS versions. Otherwise, use the game’s requirements and your own compatibility needs—not a blanket FPS ranking—to make the decision.
