A free Wi-Fi scan can show nearby networks and the channels they report using, helping you spot a possible congestion problem. It cannot prove that your neighbors caused your slow connection. To find out whether a channel change helps, compare performance before and after using the same device in the same place.

Why is my Wi-Fi so slow?

Neighboring Wi-Fi traffic can interfere with your connection, but it is only one possible cause. Google Nest Help notes that interference may come from nearby Wi-Fi networks or other sources, such as microwaves or baby monitors. Distance from the router, walls and other obstacles, an older device, slow ISP service, and several devices sharing your home network can also affect performance.

Start by noticing the pattern: is the slowdown limited to one room, one device, or every device? A problem in one room may point to weak coverage or obstacles. If both wired and wireless connections are slow, the ISP or upstream equipment may be involved. These clues help narrow the possibilities; they do not identify a cause by themselves.

Can I scan nearby Wi-Fi networks for free?

Yes. You can check the network information built into your router or use a reputable Wi-Fi scanner. Depending on the tool and device, a scan may show nearby network names, bands, channels, and signal strength. The result is a snapshot of networks the device can detect at that location and time—not a complete measurement of radio interference, airtime use, or performance.

Minhe WIFI Signal Analyzer With 2.4G And 5G Support, 2.4inch TFT Color Display Signal Analyzer For Efficient Signal Management And Analysis WIFI Analyzer Network Analyzer
  • 【WIFI Signal Scanning Tester】The analyzer is made of sturdy and material. It features a 4-inch TFT color display that shows wifi signals in the 2.4G for frequency range, along with the number of wifi networks occupying the same for frequency point. The display updates automatically.
  • 【 Power Display】The analyzer has a display function, with the power conveniently shown in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • 【Long Life】Equipped with a 600mAh luminous , the analyzer has a working current of 160mA and a standby time of about 4 hours.
  • 【Charging Indicator Light】The analyzer can be charged using the TYPE-C port, and it is equipped with a lithium-ion charging management circuit. The charging time is approximately 2 hours. The red light indicates that the analyzer is charging, while the green light indicates a full charge.
  • 【Easy to Use】Simply press and hold the button to turn on/off the analyzer. Pressing the button once starts the scanning process, and pressing it again pauses the scanning. The display shows the wifi signals at various frequencies in the 4G range, with a number displayed if multiple signals occupy the same for frequency point. The bottom waveform represents 5G signals.

Use a scan as evidence of a possible channel conflict, not proof that another network is responsible for your slowdown. A speed test has a similar limitation: it reports connection performance under the test conditions, but does not by itself distinguish Wi-Fi radio problems from ISP or other network issues.

How do I check what Wi-Fi channel my neighbors are using?

  1. Record the baseline. Note the affected device and test location. Run a connection or speed test near the router and again where the slowdown occurs. Keep the device and its position consistent for later comparisons.
  2. Compare another path if you can. A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi-only problem from a slowdown that also affects the connection to your ISP. You can also check the service your ISP is delivering.
  3. Scan from the relevant location. Use your router’s network information or a reputable scanner to view the nearby networks it detects, their reported bands and channels, and—if available—their signal strength.
  4. Check your own router settings. Find its current band, channel, and channel width. Labels and controls vary by router; some models select channels automatically or do not expose manual choices.

For a fair comparison, TP-Link’s speed-test guidance recommends using the same test device and consistent positioning and configuration. A scan and test together can make a channel change worth trying, but neither can guarantee a particular speed gain.

Which Wi-Fi channel should I use?

Choose from the channels your router and local regulations support, taking nearby network density into account. Do not assume that a channel recommendation applies everywhere: permitted channels vary by jurisdiction, and router controls and device support vary too.

For 2.4 GHz

TP-Link explains that channels in the 2.4 GHz band overlap because they are spaced more closely than their channel width. In the United States, channels 1, 6, and 11 are a common non-overlapping arrangement when using 20 MHz channel width. That is not universal advice: permitted channels and suitable arrangements differ by country. If your router offers manual selection, compare supported choices rather than simply copying a neighbor’s channel.

For 5 GHz and 6 GHz

5 GHz generally offers more non-overlapping channel choices and can provide higher throughput than 2.4 GHz, but it has shorter range and is more affected by obstacles. Whether it works better depends on your device, distance, and walls or other obstructions. TP-Link describes 6 GHz as offering more spectrum where regulations and equipment allow it; a router or device that does not support the band cannot use it.

Channel width is a tradeoff

Wider channel widths can increase potential data rates, but use more spectrum and are more susceptible to interference. A narrower width may be useful in a crowded environment, although it can reduce peak data rate. Twenty MHz is a common balance; the useful setting depends on your surroundings and what your router supports.

Does changing my Wi-Fi channel make my internet faster?

It may help if channel congestion is contributing to the problem, but a scan cannot establish that on its own, and no particular speed increase is guaranteed. Change one setting at a time where your router allows it, then repeat the original tests under similar conditions.

  1. Choose a supported channel that appears less crowded, or try a narrower channel width if the router provides that option.
  2. Repeat the test with the same device, in the same position, using the same test method and similar conditions.
  3. Compare the result with your baseline. If performance does not improve, restore the previous setting and investigate other likely causes, such as signal strength, placement, device limits, household network use, or ISP performance.

Router interfaces differ, so there is no universal menu path for changing a channel. Some routers manage channel selection automatically. If you cannot find a manual control, check your router’s instructions rather than assuming the setting is available.

When is new equipment relevant?

Do not assume that slow Wi-Fi means you need a new router. First check whether your current equipment offers the settings you need and whether the problem is actually coverage. Mesh systems and range extenders can address coverage gaps; they are not a direct fix for neighboring routers using the same channel.

Google Nest Help also points out that connected devices share available bandwidth: “Whenever a device connects to your Wi-Fi network, it competes with other devices for bandwidth (internet speed).” If only one device struggles, its capabilities or condition may matter; if several devices slow down during busy periods, household demand may be part of the explanation.
