Sometimes—but not automatically. Wi-Fi Calling on an iPhone uses your carrier’s service over Wi-Fi; it is not a separate free calling service from Apple. Whether a call costs extra depends on your carrier, plan, the number you call, and where you are calling from. Many qualifying U.S. plans include calls to U.S. numbers, while international calls and calls made while traveling may incur charges.
What iPhone Wi-Fi Calling does
Apple describes Wi-Fi Calling as a way to make or receive voice calls over Wi-Fi when cellular coverage is weak or absent. It requires carrier support and may not be available in every country or region. As Apple Support puts it, “If you have a Wi-Fi connection in an area with little or no mobile coverage, use Wi-Fi Calling to make or receive a voice phone call.” Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling instructions explain the feature and setup.
Using Wi-Fi changes how the call connects; it does not by itself determine the billing rate. Your carrier still handles the call under the terms of your plan.

How U.S. carrier billing can differ
These are examples from carrier-published U.S. guidance, not guarantees for every account, plan or destination. Carrier terms and rates can change, so check your own plan’s current rate guide.

Check these details before calling
For a specific call, confirm the relevant terms in your carrier account or rate guide. Check:
- Whether your plan includes unlimited calling or has a minute limit.
- The country associated with the number you are calling.
- Your location when you place the call, especially if you are abroad.
- Whether an international-calling or roaming add-on applies.
A call carried over Wi-Fi is not necessarily a free call. The number called and your location can affect the rate even when your phone shows that Wi-Fi Calling is active.

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on your iPhone
- Open Settings, then tap Cellular.
- If your iPhone has multiple SIMs, select the line you want to use.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- If prompted, enter or confirm your emergency-services address.
The feature must be supported by your carrier. When it is active, Apple says “Wi-Fi” appears in the status bar while you view Control Centre. Not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling.

What happens if Wi-Fi drops during a call?
If Wi-Fi is lost, the call may switch to the carrier’s cellular network using VoLTE, if that service is available and enabled. That is a connection behavior, not evidence of a different rate; billing still depends on your carrier’s terms. Apple’s support page describes this behavior.

Emergency calls still need an accurate location
Apple says emergency calls use cellular service when available. If cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi; setup may require you to register an emergency address. The FCC explains that a Wi-Fi emergency call can rely on the registered address, which may not match your actual location. Keep the address current and tell the dispatcher where you are.
