No public source in the available record confirms that Wells Fargo is in talks with Payward, Kraken’s parent, to provide crypto trading liquidity. Nasdaq’s September 10, 2026 announcement instead says Nasdaq Ventures agreed to invest in Payward and that Wells Fargo advised Nasdaq on the transaction. It does not describe Wells Fargo as Payward’s investor, liquidity provider, or negotiating partner.
What was actually announced?
Nasdaq said on September 10, 2026, that Nasdaq Ventures had agreed to invest $100 million in Payward, the parent company of Kraken. Nasdaq characterized the investment as deepening an existing relationship and tied the collaboration to tokenized equities, always-on markets, and financial-market infrastructure. Nasdaq’s announcement identifies Wells Fargo as Nasdaq’s exclusive capital markets adviser—not as a party investing in or supplying liquidity to Payward.
The distinction matters: the announced $100 million investment is from Nasdaq Ventures to Payward. It is not a Wells Fargo investment. Nasdaq President Tal Cohen described the broader market goal as moving capital and assets efficiently “with durable, high-integrity liquidity,” but that comment was about the Nasdaq–Payward relationship, not a Wells Fargo deal.
What the Nasdaq–Payward collaboration is meant to cover
Nasdaq said the companies would continue developing operational and commercial infrastructure for its proposed Nasdaq Equity Tokens design and connecting that work with Payward’s xStocks ecosystem. The planned areas include distribution, settlement, trading, and interoperability. Nasdaq gave an expected launch in the second quarter of 2027.

What Payward means by crypto liquidity
Payward describes Payward Services as business-to-business infrastructure for firms including fintechs, banks, brokerages, payment providers, and global platforms. Its stated offering combines access to trading, payments, funding, and digital-asset services with liquidity, custody, compliance, risk management, and settlement capabilities. That is Payward’s description of its own platform; it does not confirm a Wells Fargo relationship. Payward Services also describes stablecoin payment and funding rails, digital and tokenized asset markets, staking and lending, and fiat and crypto on- and off-ramps.

Payward notes that geographic restrictions apply. It also says relevant custody entities are not equivalent to FDIC-insured bank deposits and warns that derivatives and other financial instruments carry significant risk.

What remains unconfirmed
The public announcements described here do not establish whether Wells Fargo and Payward have had private or unannounced discussions. So the accurate conclusion is limited: Wells Fargo’s advisory role for Nasdaq is public; a direct Wells Fargo–Payward liquidity arrangement or negotiation is not confirmed by these sources.

A separate report about Payward discussing a possible partnership with BNY concerns a different bank and does not substantiate talks with Wells Fargo. It also said an agreement was not guaranteed. That report should not be treated as evidence of a Wells Fargo relationship.
