The $87 Walmart offer was a promotion reported in 2021, not a verified current deal on a new Chromebook. Walmart’s current catalog shows a Samsung Chromebook 4 at that price described as restored; check its condition, exact model, seller, and checkout price before buying.
What happened to the $87 deal?
Chrome Unboxed reported the $87 price in 2021 for a new Samsung Chromebook 4. That historical offer does not establish that a new unit is available now. Walmart’s current Samsung Chromebook catalog includes an $87 listing described as restored, which is a different condition from new. The current listing and its checkout price can change.
The original report is Chrome Unboxed’s 2021 article. No current new exact-match offer or local inventory is established here.
What to check before buying the restored listing
- Condition: Confirm the item is explicitly listed as restored, used, or new. Do not treat the restored $87 listing as the historical new-device offer.
- Model and SKU: Verify the full model number on the listing and ensure it matches the item being sold.
- Seller, returns, and warranty: Read the listing details for who sells the unit and what return or warranty terms apply.
- Final price: Check the price at checkout, since catalog listings and prices can change.
- Software support: Check the individual Chromebook’s update schedule, especially for a restored unit.
What the Chromebook 4 offers
Samsung’s Brazil-market Chromebook 4 specification page describes a configuration with ChromeOS, an Intel Celeron N4020 processor, Intel UHD Graphics 600, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of eMMC storage, and an 11.6-inch anti-reflective 1366 × 768 display. Those specifications may not match every US listing or SKU, so verify the exact Walmart model rather than assuming this configuration applies to the item for sale. See Samsung’s Chromebook 4 specifications.

These are modest specifications: they can suit basic ChromeOS use, but buyers expecting substantial multitasking or a newer, more capable device should compare newer budget Chromebooks by processor, memory, storage, screen, and price. No performance testing of the Walmart unit is established here.
How long will it receive updates?
Google’s current Auto Update policy lists the Samsung Chromebook 4 for automatic updates through June 2029. That is the model-family policy date, not a guarantee that every secondhand unit is in the same state. On the Chromebook itself, Google directs owners to Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule to check the device-specific date. Use that screen as the final check for the unit you are considering. See Google’s Auto Update policy and instructions for checking a Chromebook’s update schedule.

Google also says eligible devices released before 2021 may use extended updates, but those updates do not include Android apps or the Google Play Store. Read Google’s extended updates guidance before relying on that option.

The price alone does not answer that. Consider it only if you are comfortable with a restored device, the exact SKU and return terms check out, and the device-specific update schedule leaves enough support for your needs. If you want a new-in-box laptop, more headroom for multitasking, or a longer support horizon, compare newer models and weigh condition, specifications, remaining updates, warranty, returns, and final price together.
