Check Windows before changing firmware: many PCs already have virtualization enabled. In Windows, open Task Manager > Performance > CPU and look for the “Virtualization” status. If it says Disabled, enable the processor’s virtualization setting in UEFI/BIOS using instructions for your exact PC model. Intel systems may label it VT-x or Intel Virtualization Technology; AMD systems may use AMD-V or SVM Mode.

Check whether virtualization is enabled

On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then select Performance > CPU. The CPU page reports whether virtualization is enabled. This check is described in a Microsoft Learn Q&A community answer, rather than in Microsoft’s support procedure: Microsoft Learn Q&A: “How To Enable Virtualization?”.

If the status is Enabled, the processor-level setting is already on; you may not need to change firmware settings. If it is Disabled, or an app still reports that virtualization is unavailable, continue with the steps below. Virtualization settings and menu names depend on the PC manufacturer and model, so use that device’s documentation rather than assuming every PC has the same layout.

Enable VT-x or AMD-V in UEFI/BIOS

Microsoft’s documented route from Windows 10 or Windows 11 opens the PC’s UEFI settings through Advanced startup. Some PCs call the firmware utility BIOS. Before you start, identify your PC manufacturer and model and find its instructions for the virtualization setting. Microsoft links to resources from manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo; if your manufacturer or firmware developer is not listed, consult the device documentation.

  1. Open Advanced startup. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  2. Enter UEFI settings. In Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Settings > Restart. The PC restarts into its firmware utility.
  3. Find the virtualization control. Follow the instructions for your PC model. The option may be named Intel Virtualization Technology, Intel VT-x, AMD-V, or SVM Mode; names and menu locations vary.
  4. Enable the setting and exit. Save the change if the firmware prompts you, then let Windows restart. Microsoft cautions: “Only change what you need to in the UEFI (or BIOS). Adjusting other settings might prevent you from accessing Windows.” See Microsoft Support: Enable Virtualization on Windows.
  5. Verify in Windows. Return to Task Manager > Performance > CPU and check the virtualization status again.

VT-x, AMD-V, and Virtual Machine Platform are different settings

VT-x and AMD-V refer to processor virtualization technologies. Their firmware controls enable the CPU capability, although the setting may appear under a different name such as SVM Mode. Virtual Machine Platform is a separate Windows feature, not another name for the UEFI/BIOS setting.

Microsoft says some situations may also require enabling Virtual Machine Platform in Windows, particularly after upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11. To check, open Turn Windows features on or off, select Virtual Machine Platform if needed, and restart if prompted. Enabling that Windows feature does not replace turning on processor virtualization in firmware.

If an app still says virtualization is unavailable

  • Task Manager says Disabled: Revisit the PC maker’s model-specific firmware instructions and confirm the relevant virtualization option is enabled.
  • Task Manager says Enabled: The CPU setting is on. Check whether the app also requires the separate Virtual Machine Platform Windows feature; requirements vary by app.
  • You cannot find the setting: Firmware labels and locations vary. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model instead of changing unrelated firmware options.

Microsoft’s full Windows procedure and manufacturer-resource links are in its Enable Virtualization on Windows support article.
